PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Daniel Ryan (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Epeli Nailatikau (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Ryan comes to the cage accompanied by I'd Love to Knock the Hell out of You by Hank Williams, Jr. Nailatikau is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by Number of the Bollywood. The atmosphere really building for this one as we go over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 18 - 13 - 0, fighting out of London, Daniel Ryan!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 13 - 12 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Epeli Nailatikau!
The judges for this bout are Steven Brown, Richard Clark and Sam Margolis.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A shot to the liver by Nailatikau. Beautiful body shot.
Ryan throws the left hand but Nailatikau avoids the punch easily.
No luck for Ryan with that takedown attempt.

Ryan shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
Nailatikau is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Ryan has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance.
Nailatikau works his way to full guard. Good work.

Ryan has hold of Nailatikau's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Nailatikau manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.
Nailatikau is desperately trying to get back to half guard.

Nailatikau wants to hold on but Ryan pushes him away.
Nailatikau can't escape the position.
Ryan trying to control but he's not successful this time.
Ryan lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning.

Ryan looking for an armbar but decides to keep the dominant position instead.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Ryan tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
Nailatikau holds of for dear life.

Nailatikau tries to reverse the position but Ryan maintains control.
Nailatikau is squirming around, avoiding Ryan's attempts to control the action.
Nailatikau slips a leg in and gets back to half guard.
Nailatikau is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Ryan lands a nice short elbow.
Ryan seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Nailatikau does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Ryan wants to work for an arm triangle but Nailatikau is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

Nailatikau bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Ryan's guard.

Nailatikau prevents Ryan from getting back to his feet.
Nailatikau engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Ryan wants to get back to his feet but Nailatikau is in a dominant position and won't allow it.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Well, if Nailatikau is going to just lie there, perhaps we should talk about what we're having for dinner tonight… I'm having a ham and pineapple pizza… Yum. Can't wait.

That was a close round but I would say that Daniel Ryan will probably get the nod.

Ryan dives in for a single leg takedown but Nailatikau sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.

Ryan is looking for a takedown up against the cage. Nailatikau gets underhooks though and prevents the takedown attempt.

Nailatikau throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent Ryan stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly.

Ryan shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Nailatikau as he avoids it easily.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Ryan misses with a looping left.
Nailatikau throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent Ryan stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly.

Ryan shoots in looking for a takedown. Nailatikau tries to sprawl out of it but Ryan keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Nailatikau manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Ryan looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Nailatikau is fending him off so far but Ryan persists. Nope, Nailatikau circles away and we're back to standing.
Nailatikau darts in and out, connecting with a jab.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.

Nailatikau scores with a sloppy punch to the body. Not much technique there but it did the business.

Epeli Nailatikau showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

That's time! Ryan's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!


Ryan walks straight into a jab right on the nose. That one stung - he's blinking and trying to clear his head.
Nailatikau scores with a nice head shot.
Ryan sees a low kick coming and goes to check it, but it's actually a body kick and it thuds into his unprotected ribs.

Ryan has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Nailatikau is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.

Daniel Ryan's cut is bleeding quite badly. He's got to try and protect it.

Epeli Nailatikau comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
I think Nailatikau has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
