Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Paul Frederick!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 7 - 7 - 0, fighting out of New York, Purple Haze!
The judges for this bout are Lou da Vinci, David Schapiro and Jorge Garcia.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Haze tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.

Frederick clinches with his opponent.

Frederick drags the fight down to the ground.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.
Haze stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Frederick swivels though and keeps the full guard.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Frederick wants to sweep but no luck.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Purple Haze was stalling too much, according to the referee.

Frederick clinches up against the cage.
Frederick wants to take the fight to the mat but Haze manages to get underhooks and keep the fight in the clinch.

Frederick gets a nice trip takedown into half guard.
Haze pushes Frederick off looking to stand but Frederick dives back in and keeps control.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
Haze is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

Frederick stands up from half guard... He's had enough of that ground malarky for the time being.
Haze shoots for a double leg takedown but Frederick sprawls well. He's pushed Haze's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

Frederick shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Haze's guard.
Haze can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Frederick controls the pace.
Frederick has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Frederick seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Haze for as long as he can get away with.

Haze is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Frederick to keep the fight standing.
Paul Frederick has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Purple Haze.

Frederick has Haze pressed up against the cage. He's trying to work for a single leg takedown. Frederick pulls back from the cage and twists to the side, sending Haze tumbling to the mat - Frederick dives into Haze's guard.
Frederick is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Frederick accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

Frederick drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Frederick jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!
Frederick is in close to Haze's body, working some short punches and elbows.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Frederick tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Haze manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.

and Haze makes the exchange count by landing a cracking kick to the body. Frederick really felt that one!

Haze tries to kick Frederick off but Frederick keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
Frederick seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Haze does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.

Haze is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.
Haze wants to get back to full guard but Frederick has passed into side control.
Haze pushes Frederick away and creates a bit of space to escape. He's almost out here... but no, Frederick gets a good hold of his legs and remains firmly in side control.

It looks like Purple Haze has been cut.
Haze is trying to improve his position.

We're going to have a standup here because Paul Frederick wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Frederick has gone for a leg lock! Haze slips out almost immediately though and dives into Frederick's guard.

Frederick has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Haze can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Frederick escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Haze gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Haze might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Frederick haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.

Haze is fighting off a takedown attempt but Frederick is just too persistent for him and manages to trip Haze to the mat. Haze regains guard as soon as the fighters hit the mat.

Frederick is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

Haze takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Well Frederick has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
