5 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Derick Rose! The judges for this bout are Roger Salmon, Chris Saunders and Josh West.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Van Der Sluijs lands a jab to the nose. Rose fails to land the takedown. Rose shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Van Der Sluijs pinned against the cage. Van Der Sluijs gets the underhooks and manages to circle away. Van Der Sluijs connects nicely with a jab. Noted by the judges no doubt. Well, he's not going to score with shots like that. A lazy body kick attempt from Van Der Sluijs. Rose is trying hard to land a takedown here. Van Der Sluijs sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet. James Van Der Sluijs has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Derick Rose. Like a baseball bat into the meat of his leg there - nice leg kick by Van Der Sluijs.

Rose closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Van Der Sluijs's guard. A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Rose accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand. Rose has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan. Van Der Sluijs wants to stand and escape but Rose is having none of it.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Derick Rose wasn't active enough on the ground. Van Der Sluijs swings for the body but Rose moves out of range.

Rose shoots for a takedown but Van Der Sluijs saw that one coming a mile off and avoided it easily. A big left from Rose misses. Rose moves out of range of the strikes. Rose shoots in and bounces Van Der Sluijs off the cage to secure the takedown into guard. Rose won't allow Van Der Sluijs to get back to his feet. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Still in half guard, Rose seems content to control. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Derick Rose dominated that round. The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!

Rose closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard. Van Der Sluijs tries to kick Rose off but Rose keeps his base steady and stays in half guard. Rose is thinking about going for an arm triangle but he can't free his leg.
Van Der Sluijs is trying to stand up here but Rose is controlling him well. Rose sitting and controlling from the half guard. Derick Rose has got the better of the ground game so far. Rose is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.
Rose is looking for a kimura. It's pretty deep but Van Der Sluijs still has the half guard so he's probably OK. Oh, Van Der Sluijs has exploded into a beautiful escape there and after a quick scramble, he's ended up in side control on top! Nice work!

Van Der Sluijs tries to get to his feet but he's trapped momentarily. Rose is looking to reverse the position. Van Der Sluijs tries to stand but Rose controls the position and pulls Van Der Sluijs into his guard. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Rose is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. That must have hurt but he shrugs his shoulders and looks to return the favor. Rose darts in looking for a takedown but Van Der Sluijs gets double underhooks and turns Rose into the cage. Rose checks a leg kick. It looks like Van Der Sluijs has been trying to sharpen up his punching technique, as it looks crisper than last time we saw him. Van Der Sluijs pushing out the jab but it's not landing. Rose throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.

Rose thows a left - swing and a miss! Rose dives in for a single leg takedown but Van Der Sluijs sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage. Rose breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.

Rose shoots in and drives through. Van Der Sluijs sprawls well. James Van Der Sluijs has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Derick Rose. Rose takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired. Rose takes a head kick and shrugs it off.
This has been an exciting period of action! The fighters circle, before Van Der Sluijs throws a beautiful high kick that crashes into Rose's neck, sending him stumbling to the floor! Van Der Sluijs lands more strikes and forces a referee stoppage! That one ended in an instant!
