PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Jake Barbossa (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Leo Vieira (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Barbossa kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is Intergalactic by The Beastie Boys. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 15 - 16 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Jake Barbossa!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 18 - 24 - 1, fighting out of Hilo, Leo Vieira!
The judges for this bout are Chris Saunders, Micheangelo Fripello and Josh West.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Vieira displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Barbossa.
Vieira slips under a jab.
Barbossa misses with a lunging right hand

and Vieira counters with a shoot takedown. Barbossa fights it but they end up in guard.
The referee wants the fighters to be more active or he's going to reset them on the feet.
Vieira with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Vieira trying to control but Barbossa is working from the bottom.
Barbossa tries to land a sweep but no joy.
Vieira looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights.
Vieira wants to control from the top but Barbossa keeps moving.

Vieira drops back, looking for a kneebar! Barbossa looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Barbossa looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Barbossa!
Vieira is trying to control Barbossa's posture but Barbossa avoids it.
Vieira really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Barbossa. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.

Barbossa decides to stand back up. Barbossa steps back and let's Vieira get back to his feet.
Barbossa shoots in for a takedown but Vieira shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Vieira has gone for a leg lock! Barbossa slips out almost immediately though and dives into Vieira's guard.

Barbossa throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Vieira works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Barbossa trying to control the position from guard on top but Vieira is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Barbossa not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Barbossa.

Vieira tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Barbossa defends well and Vieira ends up having to push Barbossa into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.

Vieira has hold of a leg and is looking for a trip takedown. Barbossa avoids it nicely though and we remain in the clinch.
Barbossa has a body lock and is looking for a takedown. Vieira is bouncing around trying to prevent the takedown and somehow he has indeed managed to stay on his feet.

Barbossa wants to lay and pray for a moment but Vieira keeps working.

Vieira displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Barbossa throws out the jab.

Barbossa has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Vieira can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

Vieira postures up as if he's going to throw some strikes but drops back for an ankle! Barbossa is in big trouble! He looks ready to tap! But no, he's escaped and dives on top of Vieira, into his guard.

Barbossa is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Vieira.

Barbossa is really head hunting here, hardly looking to strike to the body at all.
Vieira dives in for a single leg takedown but Barbossa sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.

Vieira's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

Barbossa shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Vieira pinned against the cage. Vieira gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

Barbossa bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.

The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.

Barbossa is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.
Barbossa looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.

Barbossa has controlled the position for a good 20 seconds, which will no doubt be starting to frustrate his opponent.

We're going to have a standup here because Jake Barbossa wasn't active enough for the referee's liking.
Vieira bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.

Barbossa shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Vieira but Vieira pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Barbossa looks to score with a jab to the body but Vieira is just out of range.

Barbossa connects with a hook to the side of his opponent's head.

Vieira shoots in and gets a takedown into Barbossa's guard.
Barbossa controls Vieira momentarily but Vieira frees himself.
Barbossa has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

Vieira is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Barbossa is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Barbossa has escaped and now he's on top!
Barbossa slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.
Leo Vieira has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.

Well I reckon that's a shut out for Barbossa, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
