Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
8 - 5 - 1, fighting out of Sydney, Steve Vega! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
18 - 18 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Ned Alonso! The judges for this bout are Summer Carpenter, Chris Dean and Steve Erwin.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Vega loads up on a big right hand but Alonso slips the punch. Alonso lands a two punch combo.
Vega misses with a left hand and Alonso counters with a quick right hand to the jaw. Alonso misses with a jab, cross combination.
Alonso gets a takedown into half guard. We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon. Vega looking for submissions from an awkward position here. Alonso is nestled in close to Vega, controlling him well. He's worked in a nice elbow to the side of the head as well, for good measure. Vega is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Alonso pulls his head out easily. Vega is trying to get back to full guard. Alonso lands a big shot. The thud that echoes around the arena is like music to the fans' ears. Vega is working for an escape here. He's hooked one of Alonso's legs and he's managed to sneak out and take Alonso's back! Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Vega is persistently looking for the submission but Alonso is defending it well.
Alonso is trying to get back to his feet but Vega has full control of the position and if anything, Alonso has just worked his way into a worse spot.
That's one minute gone in the round. Alonso trying to control but he's just got himself in more trouble. Vega looking for the choke but no joy. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Alonso preventing the rear naked choke attempt from Vega. Vega is remaining active here, looking for the choke. The more discerning members of the crowd will appreciate his efforts.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Alonso looks to control his opponent's hands but he's not mananging it at the moment. Alonso tries to roll but Vega sticks to his back.
Alonso keeps trying to improve his position. Vega is working the back position looking for the choke. Oh, he's slid into an armbar! Beautiful transition and Alonso taps out! Fantastic Jiu Jitsu from Vega.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:57 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Steve Vega! After winning the bout, Steve Vega thanked all his fans and promised he'd do even better in his next fight. The crowd seemed to love his humility.
