Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 1, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Homer Mullen! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Murilo Souza! The judges for this bout are Mauricio Rocha, Alexandre Firmino and Daniel Cesar.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Good work by Souza as he checks the leg kick. Mullen will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts. A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Mullen. A combination from Souza does no damage. Mullen gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Souza to score an easy takedown into full guard. The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup. Mullen wants to control here, rather than go for any submissions from the bottom. At least for now. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Souza wants to control from the top but Mullen keeps moving. Mullen manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Souza manages to get himself to full guard.
Souza has Mullen pulled in close to control his posture. Mullen is in close to Souza's body, working some short punches and elbows.

Mullen is in full mount, looking to secure a guillotine but Souza is surviving well by controlling Mullen's body position as best he can. Mullen lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning. Mullen has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Souza is wriggling around trying to escape.
Mullen wants to get back to his feet but Souza is holding on tight.
Souza tries to control Mullen's body but Mullen pushes him off. Souza squirms to his side and now Mullen has his back! Souza is in bad spot here.

That's four minutes gone in the round. Mullen thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Souza's head. Mullen wants to work for an arm triangle but Souza is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end. Mullen wants to control but Souza is keeping him busy. Souza blocking the ground and pound attempt from Mullen. Mullen is trying to work for a kimura but Souza is defending well.

Homer Mullen dominated that round. That's time! Mullen's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.
Mullen displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Souza. Souza drives through with a takedown into guard. Souza seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up. There's a bit of a scramble here and now Mullen is on top in guard.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Souza can do anything to dispel that myth. Mullen tries to stand but Souza is controlling from the bottom. Mullen throwing strikes but missing. Homer Mullen overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.
That's one minute gone in the round. Mullen drops back, looking for a kneebar! Souza looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Souza looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Souza! Souza trying to control the position but Mullen is working away. Mullen is moving his hips around well on the bottom and has managed to get back to half guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Souza is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Mullen has managed to free his arm - good work. Mullen regains full guard. Nicely done. Souza is breathing heavily. Mullen has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall. Mullen is trying to keep Souza in close.

That's three minutes gone in the round. Souza controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. Souza takes a big uppercut there. He seems a bit wobbly but no, he's OK.

Souza throws a leg kick and Mullen counters with a big head kick but Souza shrugs it off. Souza stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Souza wants it to stay on the feet. Souza throws a body kick that misses. Mullen misses with a body shot. Nice footwork from Souza.

That's four minutes gone in the round. Excellent takedown into side control there by Souza. Souza is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Mullen has escaped the position, nice work there. Souza taking a breather here. Souza tries to get to his feet but he's trapped momentarily. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Mullen managing to avoid any damage from the strikes thrown by Souza.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Mullen is looking for a sweep. Mullen manages to get back to half guard. Mullen wants to get back to full guard. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
That was a close second round but I would say that Homer Mullen will probably get the nod. Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! This is the final round!
Souza fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Mullen manages to avoid it. Souza throws a nice looking combination but Mullen bobs and weaves to avoid any damage. Souza shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Mullen as he avoids it easily. Mullen shoots in for a double leg but Souza sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy. Mullen fails with a takedown attempt. Souza throws a jab when Mullen was well out of range. Souza bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control. Mullen wants to control but Souza postures up. Mullen is in a bad position, trying to hold on for dear life but he is really struggling to maintain any sort of control.
That's one minute gone in the round. Mullen is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Souza is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him. Souza takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired. Mullen tries to bench press Souza off him but Souza keeps the position. Souza wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Mullen, who protects the arm well. Souza remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while. Souza wants to stand but Mullen has his arm trapped. Mullen is positioning himself to get back to half guard. Mullen manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.

Mullen is doing well to control the posture of his opponent and prevent any damage. Mullen is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent. Mullen is really struggling to control Souza but he's trying to hold on to the position.
The ref stands the fighters back up because Homer Mullen just wasn't active enough. Souza shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Mullen napping and manages to drive through into side control! Mullen is looking for a sweep. Mullen manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu! Souza has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Mullen is working away from the top position though. Souza has a hand on Mullen's thigh, trying to get back to full guard. Mullen takes advantage of the position though and mounts him!
That's four minutes gone in the round. Mullen pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage. Souza tries to get back to half guard but can't. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Souza in a bad spot here, taking shots to the head. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Mullen tries to control but Souza wriggling away. Mullen dominating with strikes here.
And that's the end of the fight! That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Homer Mullen. Well Mullen has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win...
