PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Karl Westamar (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Mark Lion (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Westamar comes to the cage accompanied by No Sleep. We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Karl Westamar!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Mark Lion!
The judges for this bout are Ben Hemmingworth, Francis DeMontford and Ben Watson.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Westamar lands a jab to Lion's midsection.
Westamar tries to clinch but Lion is having none of it.
Westamar fails with a takedown attempt from distance.

Lion drops down and drives through with a powerful takedown into guard.
Westamar avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.

Westamar is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Lion is aware though and is defending well.
Westamar utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Lion trying to control but Westamar is working from the bottom.
Westamar pulls Lion in to control the position.
Westamar working a defensive guard but Lion passes into half guard.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Lion content to control rather than advance.

Lion is working for a kimura but Westamar is defending it quite comfortably.
Lion has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan.

Westamar slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.
Westamar preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.

Westamar keeping moving, preventing Lion from controlling successfully.
Westamar is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Lion trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Lion slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up.

The referee has ruled that neither fighter is active enough on the ground and has stood them back up.

Lion darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Lion is taking a breather. Westamar says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.

Lion working the head and body with strikes.
Westamar gets full guard.
Westamar wants to sweep but no luck.
Westamar is breathing heavily.

Lion thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Lion trying to control the position from guard on top but Westamar is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
Lion is working the ground and pound from guard. He might want to try advancing position though to get more of an impact.
Westamar controls Lion momentarily but Lion frees himself.
Westamar keeping moving, preventing Lion from controlling successfully.

Westamar can't keep his opponent in guard - Lion advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.

Lion escapes and gets back to his feet.
Lion looking to throw a kick but he's pulled out of it.
Westamar wants to clinch up but Lion keeps it at a distance.
Westamar slips a jab and a cross from Lion.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Lion moves into the clinch successfully.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Westamar tries to pull guard but Lion forces him back to his feet, against the cage.
Lion unloads a knee to the mid-section. Westamar lets out a prehistoric sounding urrrrgh.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Mark Lion dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.



Lion looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Lion is controlling the pace.
Mark Lion has got the better of the ground game so far.
Lion wants to free his trapped foot but Westamar is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Westamar could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely.
Lion is stalling here. Westamar is in no mood to hang around though. He's locked up a kimura from the bottom! Lion seems to be keeping calm but he's forced to roll out of the hold and Westamar has ended up in side control on the top. Nice work.
Lion is trying to improve his position.

Westamar is looking to finish here, going for an Americana. Lion knows the correct defense though, so he's OK.
Lion manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!

Lion decides to stand up and try his luck on the feet.

Lion shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Westamar's guard.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Westamar throwing strikes off his back to little effect.
Lion stays in close to Westamar's body and controls the position.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Mark Lion was stalling too much, according to the referee.
Westamar misses with a takedown
and Lion counters with a left and a right that stings Westamar.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Lion misses with a takedown attempt. He shot from a bit too far out.
Lion connects with a looping right hand.
Lion tries to clinch there but Westamar circles away.
Lion lands with a slapping head kick.
Westamar wants to clinch.

Lion lands with a nice combination. Westamar backs away looking to recover.

Lion fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Westamar, pushing him back against the cage.
Westamar looks like he'd prefer to be striking at range right now.
Westamar wants to break free but Lion has control.

Lion has moved round to his opponent's back and is looking for a suplex! Oh snap! He's tossed Westamar clear over his head and slammed him to the mat!
The crowd hopeful of a finish here - Lion's supporters are on their feet, screaming for him to go for the rear naked choke.
Westamar turns into Lion and is now in his guard.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Lion not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Westamar throws a strike but Lion rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Lion stands up from Westamar's guard - Lion perhaps looking for a knockout.
Lion goes for a high kick. It partially lands.


It looks like Karl Westamar has been cut.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Lion lands with a slapping head kick.

Lion gets a takedown into half guard.
Lion winds up and cracks Westamar with a swinging punch to the side of the head.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Mark Lion showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The cut man is working on Karl Westamar's cut.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.


Lion shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Westamar but Westamar pushes him off and we're back to square one.
Lion displays good takedown defense there as he swats away a double leg from Westamar.

Lion moves into the clinch.
Lion tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Westamar just stands there and leans against the cage.
Westamar wants a takedown but no success here.

Lion jumps guard and drags Westamar to the mat. He's obviously going to be looking for submissions off his back.

Lion kicks Westamar off and gets to his feet.
Westamar misses with an uppercut. Lion saw that one coming.
Lion showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Westamar.
Westamar avoids the head kick by Lion.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

That's one minute gone in the round.

Westamar clinches.
Lion tries for a takedown but Westamar manages to get underhooks.
Karl Westamar has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Mark Lion.
The pace slowing considerably in the clinch, as Westamar takes a break from that fighting nonsense to think about the finer things in life.
Lion tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
Lion tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Westamar just stands there and leans against the cage.
Westamar is trying to pull guard but Lion turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.
Lion tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Westamar smiles and moves away.
Westamar misses the shot to the body.

Lion clinches up against the cage.

Westamar jumps into guard, dragging Lion to the mat.
Westamar keeping moving, preventing Lion from controlling successfully.

Lion gets to his feet and steps away from his opponent.
Lion fails with the takedown.
Lion blocks a head kick by Westamar.
Karl Westamar is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Lion throws a head kick that misses.
Westamar misses with a wild body shot.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Lion changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Westamar looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.

Westamar bucks up and manages to escape back to his feet!
Lion leaves Westamar with his face pressed against the mat as he sprawls beautifully, defending against a solid takedown attempt.

Lion has Westamar up against the cage in a clinch.
Westamar gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Lion.
Westamar drops to a knee looking for a takedown but Lion gets the underhooks and prevents it.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Lion breaks the clinch.

Lion shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Westamar is trying to defend but Lion finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Lion looks to score some points with some ground and pound.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.
Westamar is looking to improve his position.
Lion seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.

Mark Lion comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Lion has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
