PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Grant Ward (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jay Cutler (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Fingers crossed for an exciting fight - I'm sure both fighters are looking for a nice under the table bonus!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 3 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Grant Ward!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Jay Cutler!
The judges for this bout are , Frank Antenori and Don Winkell.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Cutler throws a jab but it's blocked by Ward.
Cutler throws a sloppy head kick and Ward moves out of range easily.
Ward fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.

The fight moves into the clinch position.
Cutler told us before the fight that he's been working on his elbows. An under utilised technique these days - let's see if it can sway the outcome of the fight.
Ward fails to pull guard.
Ward misses with a short punch on the inside.
Ward is trying to stall.
Ward softening up his opponent with strikes, against the cage.
Cutler avoids a wild elbow strike from Ward.
Ward using the Thai plumb to throw knees but Cutler has his back arched nicely, preventing the strike.
Cutler lands an elbow that stopped Ward in his tracks for a moment.
Ward is looking to control Cutler's arms but Cutler gets an underhook and turns him. Now Ward has his back to the cage.
Ward jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Cutler walks away with a smile on his face. Ward gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.

Cutler forces Ward back against the cage and clinches.
Ward lands a left hand that snaps the head of Cutler backwards.
I was talking to Ward's coach per-fight and he was telling me that they'd been working on the clinch in the runup to this fight.
Cutler pushes off an throws an elbow but Ward leans to the side and avoids it. We're back to clinching against the cage.
Cutler throws an elbow but it's blocked.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Cutler misses with an elbow over the top.
Ward lands a right hand that snaps the head of Cutler backwards.
Ward misses with a punch on the inside.
Ward tries a knee to the head but he's missed.
Cutler pushes off and fires off an elbow that misses, before clinching up again, against the cage.
Cutler lands a nice elbow.


It looks like Grant Ward has been cut.
Ward tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Grant Ward. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Ward tries a knee to the head but Cutler blocks it.
Ward fails to pull guard.
Ward is trying to pull guard but being pressed up against the cage enables Cutler to keep the fight standing.
Cutler lands a nice elbow.
Ward tries to take the fight to the ground by pulling guard but can't manage it.
Cutler avoiding damage as Ward throws knees to the body.
Ward jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Cutler walks away with a smile on his face. Ward gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.
Cutler fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.

Ward gets tackled into the cage by Cutler. Cutler maintains the clinch.
Cutler lands a nice elbow.


Grant Ward's cut is getting worse.
Ward is looking to score with knees to the body. Maybe he'll change it up and go body then head. Cutler is defending well for now.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Cutler looks to throw an elbow but misses.
Cutler lands a nice elbow.

Ward successfully pulls guard.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Cutler avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Ward being controlled here, momentarily.

Ward has an omoplata and is looking to use it perhaps as a submission or perhaps to transition. Cutler is in a bit of discomfort here, but he's managed to free himself and has dived into side control! That didn't work out too well for Ward.
Cutler in side control, just content to control the action for now.
Ward tries to buck Cutler off but Cutler is having none of it.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Cutler in side control lands a decent elbow.


Grant Ward's cut is bleeding quite badly. He's got to try and protect it.
Cutler is moving around in side control but his primary objective seems to be to maintain the position.
Ward is working to avoid the ground and pound but Cutler connects with a decent elbow.
Ward wants to control but Cutler postures up.
Ward might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.
Ward tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Ward is trying to control Cutler's posture but Cutler avoids it.
Cutler moving around in side mount but really he's just happy to control for now.
Cutler cracks Ward with an elbow. That is naaassty.


Jeez, Grant Ward's cut is really nasty now. The referee must be thinking about getting that checked.

The referee calls the doctor in to look at Grant Ward's cut. Oh no, the doctor has called an end to the bout!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:59 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Cut). Jay Cutler!
In defeat, Grant Ward stepped up to the mic, saying 'I got to get my act together. I can't be winning one fight then showing up poorly for my next fight. I have to win with consistency. With that said, I'll be back. Thanks INSANITY for having me'.
