Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Ethan Shepherd! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Ivan Batishchev! The judges for this bout are Dmitry Maklakov, Valeri Chadov and Illya Tyunina.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Batishchev closes the distance and looks for a trip takedown... aaaand he's got it - Batishchev lands in his opponent's guard. The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up. Batishchev got a little sloppy there for a moment and Shepherd has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Batishchev has managed to get both his arms back between Shepherd's legs - danger averted. Batishchev looking to pass the guard. Shepherd trying to keep a closed guard but Batishchev is proving a slippery customer.
Shepherd could do with losing a few pounds - he looks very soft around the mid section, to put it politely. Batishchev trying to control the position from guard on top but Shepherd is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Shepherd being controlled here, momentarily. Batishchev must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
That's one minute gone in the round.
Ethan Shepherd has forced the referee to step in and bring the fight back to the feet. Shepherd throws a jab when Batishchev was well out of range. Batishchev looking for a takedown here - he's got it. Batishchev trying to control but Shepherd is working from the bottom. Batishchev with a flurry of punches that miss. Batishchev throws a big right hand that misses. Batishchev throwing strikes from guard but Shepherd blocks nicely. Batishchev working some strikes from top position.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Shepherd is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. Batishchev is holding a leg here, probably looking for an ankle lock - he drops back and goes for it! Shepherd is in trouble! Is it all over??? No! Shepherd has escaped and now he's on top! Batishchev wants to sweep here but Shepherd controlling him for the moment. Shepherd postures up.
Batishchev had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Shepherd defends it easily. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Batishchev manages to land a sweep and now he's in mount on top!
That's three minutes gone in the round. Shepherd is looking to get to half guard. Batishchev dominating with strikes here. Batishchev tries to control but Shepherd wriggling away. Shepherd in a bad spot here, taking shots to the head. Batishchev breaks from Shepherd's wrist control and lands an elbow. Batishchev landing strikes, looking to finish! Shepherd is breathing heavily. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Batishchev controlling from mount.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Batishchev postures up and throws a couple of big shots that have Shepherd in real trouble here! The ref calls for Shepherd to improve his position which he doesn't do, so the referee has no choice but to end the fight due to the strikes!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:23 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Ivan Batishchev! Ivan Batishchev decided to thank the fans in attendance for making a great atmosphere. It seemed to go down pretty well.
