PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Faustino Burnett (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Matheus Carla (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). We have two fighters making their debuts here, so let's see who comes out of this one with their first professional victory.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Faustino Burnett!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Matheus Carla!
The judges for this bout are Josh West, Paul Gruel and Colin Fray.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Carla feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.
Burnett is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Carla trying to control but Burnett is working from the bottom.
Carla working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
Carla throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Burnett works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Carla accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Carla trying to control but Burnett is working from the bottom.

Matheus Carla has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.
Well, he's not going to score with shots like that. A lazy body kick attempt from Carla.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Carla tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Burnett manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat.

Carla darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard.
Carla looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
Carla throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.
It looks like the ref is thinking about a standup.
Burnett wants to get back to his feet.

Matheus Carla has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.
Burnett dives in for a single leg takedown but Carla sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.

Carla has dropped down and is working for a takedown. Burnett is trying to keep an underhook but Carla manages to get the takedown into half guard.
Burnett wants to improve his position but Carla is controlling well.
Carla stalling.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Burnett is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Carla pulls his head out easily.
Carla slows the pace down in half guard.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Matheus Carla has forced the referee to step in and restart the fight on the feet.
Carla misses with a body shot.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it.

Carla drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.

Carla tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.
Burnett regains half guard there - taking advantage of Carla's attempt to lay and pray for a moment.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Matheus Carla dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!



Carla looking to score a takedown here. Burnett is defending well but Carla drives through and ends up in Burnett's guard.
Carla looking to sit in guard and control but Burnett gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.
Carla is trying to control the position but Burnett postures up.
Carla is pulling down on Burnett's head to control his posture.
Matheus Carla has got the better of the ground game so far.

Carla looking to hit a scissor sweep but Burnett is one step ahead there.

We've had a lack of effective grappling in the last minute or so, which could well see a referee standup.
Carla wants to stand and escape but Burnett is having none of it.

OK we're going to have a standup here. Matheus Carla hasn't been effective enough on the ground and the referee wants a restart.

Carla drives through with a takedown into Burnett's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position.
Carla has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Burnett is proving hard to escape from.
Burnett really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Matheus Carla wasn't active enough on the ground.
Carla comes forward and lands a shot to the body, then darts back out of range.
Carla tries to clinch up.
Carla pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Carla misses with a double jab
and Burnett counters with a good, hard body kick but Carla shrugs it off.
Burnett uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Carla.

Carla gets the takedown into side control.
Carla is breathing heavily.
This has been an exciting period of action!
A control attempt from Burnett but he's now mounted!

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Carla sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment.
Burnett is desperately trying to improve his position but Carla has a good base and remains in mount.
Carla looking to finish with strikes here!
Carla lands with some vicious ground and pound - can Burnett hang on?

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Carla takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Burnett bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Matheus Carla showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. This is the final round!


Carla throws a series of punches but Burnett avoids them all with ease.
Carla misses with a two punch combination.
Carla wants to clinch up but Burnett keeps it at a distance.

Carla takes the fight into the clinch.

Carla pulls Burnett into guard.

Carla has his foot on Burnett's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Burnett works his way back into a safe position though.
Burnett has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player.
Burnett has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Carla is proving hard to escape from.
Carla manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Burnett manages to get himself to full guard.
Carla wanted to stand there but Burnett had control of the position.

Carla passes Burnett's left leg - he's now in half guard.

Carla is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Burnett is just riding it out for now. Carla eventually gives up the hold.
Burnett is not content to let Carla control the position.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Carla looks to land a strike but Burnett avoids it nicely and regains full guard.
Carla would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard.
Carla controls the pace of the fight for a moment.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

The ref calls for a clean break and stands the fighters back up. Matheus Carla wasn't active enough on the ground.

Carla changes levels and drives through with a really nice takedown into side control. Burnett looks really pissed at himself for not defending that better.
Carla takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.
Burnett prevents Carla from improving position.
Burnett trying to remain calm as Carla controls from the top position.

Carla creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Burnett sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike.
Burnett is trying to control Carla's posture but Carla avoids it.
The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.

Carla closes the distance and scores a nice trip takedown into half guard. Burnett did well to prevent Carla getting side control.

Carla seems to be working for a kimura but Burnett defends the submission attempt.
Faustino Burnett has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Matheus Carla is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.
Burnett wants to improve his position but Carla is controlling well.

And that's the end of the fight!
Matheus Carla comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Carla has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
