PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Maria Coffey (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Kendrick Garcia (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Garcia is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by Break Stuff. Kendrick Garcia told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Maria Coffey!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Kendrick Garcia!
The judges for this bout are Sosuke Kotani, Yukihiro Shimada and Taro Takaoka.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Coffey with a poor takedown

and Garcia counters with a nice double leg into side control. Coffey won't be happy with that.
Coffey is looking for a sweep.
Coffey wings away with a couple of strikes but they don't land.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Garcia stands up and we're back to a striking position.
Coffey tries to clinch

and Garcia counters with a nice double leg into side control. Coffey won't be happy with that.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Garcia gets to mount! Coffey was on the offensive and wasn't defending properly.
Coffey is looking to get to half guard.

Coffey slips a leg in and gets back to half guard.
Coffey pushes Garcia off but Garcia dives into side control.

Coffey is looking for a sweep.

Coffey tries to slip a leg under to move to half guard but Garcia presses down on the leg and jumps into full mount!
Coffey tries to get back to half guard but can't.

The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Kendrick Garcia will probably get the nod.
That's time! Back to the action!


Coffey goes for a double leg but Garcia avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Garcia continues to drive forward.

Coffey pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.

Coffey shoots in for a takedown! He's got it and he's managed to land in side control! That's better than Coffey was expecting from the takedown attempt, I'm sure!
Garcia is trying to get back to his feet.

Coffey is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Garcia is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

Coffey tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Coffey has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
You can see the frustration on Garcia's face as Coffey controls the position.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Coffey decides to stand back up.
Maria Coffey is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Garcia stuffs the takedown.
Garcia needs to keep his hands up - Coffey had a free shot at his head there.
Coffey misses with a few strikes there.
Coffey shoots in for a double leg but Garcia sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Maria Coffey. That's going to take a lot out of him.

Coffey gets a takedown into half guard.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Coffey is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Garcia has managed to free his arm - good work.

Coffey is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Garcia is just riding it out for now. Coffey eventually gives up the hold.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

Coffey is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Garcia defends it well.

The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action! This is the final round!


Coffey fails to land with a series of punches.
Coffey dives in and grabs Garcia's left leg, looking for a takedown. Garcia pushes down on Coffey's head and hops out.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Coffey's jab looks to have found its range, popping Garcia under the eye.
Coffey tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.

Coffey fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Coffey fails with the takedown

and Garcia counters with a shoot takedown. Coffey fights it but they end up in guard.
Garcia wants to stand but Coffey has a closed guard, so he can't escape.
Maria Coffey overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Garcia got a little sloppy there for a moment and Coffey has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Garcia has managed to get both his arms back between Coffey's legs - danger averted.
Garcia won't allow Coffey to sweep him here.

Garcia is looking to stand up but Coffey won't let him.
The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.

The ref stands the fighters back up. Kendrick Garcia was stalling too much, according to the referee.
Coffey shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Garcia pinned against the cage. Garcia gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.

Garcia is pushing Coffey's head away, looking to escape. Coffey manages to hold on to the position though.

Coffey goes for an armbar! This could be all over! Wait, no, Garcia rolls with the submission and now he's on top in Coffey's guard! Nice work there by Garcia!

That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Maria Coffey.
Well Coffey has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
