Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the lightweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
7 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Nikolai Nation! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
6 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Matt Hughes! The judges for this bout are Jonathan Paton, Jorge Garcia and John Roberts.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Hughes staying out of range there. Hughes with a nice cross. A telegraphed right hand from Nation misses the target. Hughes tries a switch kick but it misses it's target. Nice shot by Nation. Nation swings for the body but Hughes moves out of range.
Hughes displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Nation throws out the jab. A bone on bone clash there as Nation blocks the leg kick.
We've been informed that Hughes has been sparring a lot of Muay Thai in the buildup to this fight so let's see if that has an impact on the result. Sloppy strikes from Nation. Those never looked like landing. Hughes swings wildly with a couple of big hooks
and Nation makes him pay by landing a nice hook to the body before moving out of range. Nation throws a body shot but no joy. Hughes works over Nation's head and body with a nice combination. Nation scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Hughes doesn't seem bothered though. Nation has been working on his boxing with his coaches at The Sweat Lodge in the buildup to the fight. Nation lands a nice looking body shot.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Nation cracks a nice hook into Hughes's ribs. A decent looking cross lands there for Nation. Nation lands with a cross. Nation fakes low and throws an overhand right that catches Hughes on the side of the head. Nation connects nicely with a jab. Noted by the judges no doubt. Hughes misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
That's one minute gone in the round. Hughes throws a right and a left that Nation avoids nicely. Jab by Nation. Hughes throws out a loose jab but Nation uses good head movement to avoid it. Nation pushes forward with a 1-2 combination that forces Hughes back to the cage. Nation follows up with a solid lead hook to the liver. Nation throws a hard body shot but it just misses.
Hughes dodges the punch combination from Nation.
Nation fakes low and throws an overhand right that catches Hughes on the side of the head.
Hughes is rocked! Hughes is wiping some vaseline out of his eye. Nation doesn't give a rats ass about fair play and cracks him with a massive hook to the side of the head! Hughes crumples to the floor out cold! The cornerman is going to be in Hughes's bad books for that mishap!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:36 of round 1, we have a winner by way of KO (Punch). Nikolai Nation! Nikolai Nation retains his lightweight title! An out of breath Nikolai Nation thanked his loyal fans in his post fight interview, giving them credit for his success over the course of his career.
