Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
9 - 8 - 0, fighting out of New York, Don Julio! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
22 - 7 - 0, fighting out of New York, Marcelio Garcia! The judges for this bout are Russell Pearce, Jonathan Paton and Lou da Vinci.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Julio fails to land with a series of punches.
Garcia takes an uppercut right on the button but keeps his composure.
Garcia uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Julio.
Don Julio seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Garcia takes a shot to the eye socket. That's gotta hurt. Julio connects with a nice looking jab.
Julio lands a jab to the nose. Garcia ducks right into an uppercut from Julio. Garcia has his takedown stuffed and Julio counters with a head kick. That will keep Garcia thinking before he tries any more sloppy attacks! No luck with that takedown attempt from Garcia. Julio scores with a nice looking left hook and follows it up with an uppercut!
Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Julio scores with a punch to the gut of his opponent. Garcia walks into a left hand.
That's one minute gone in the round. Julio scores with a jab to the jaw. Garcia shoots in and drives through. Julio sprawls well. Don Julio has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Marcelio Garcia. Julio cracks Garcia with a good jab. Julio gets caught flat footed, as Garcia shoots in with a quick takedown into guard. The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace. Julio avoiding any damage from the ground and pound. Garcia passes easily into side control. Nice work. Garcia tries to advance to mount but can't. Garcia scores with a couple of nice shots to the head there. The referee takes a look at Julio to see if he's OK. Julio knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Garcia on the ground. Garcia looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything. Garcia manages to hold on to the position though. Julio prevents Garcia from improving position. Garcia tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Garcia has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought! Garcia is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Julio has escaped the position, nice work there.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Julio wants to escape from the position here - easier said than done! Garcia advances to full mount. Poor strikes thrown by Garcia there. More accuracy and less frantic strikes would help!
Garcia looking to control but Julio is working nicely, looking to advance position himself. Garcia looking to ground and pound but Julio is blocking nicely.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Garcia goes for an armbar but he's fallen flat on his backside there and now Julio is on top in guard.
Julio would like to get this fight back to the feet but can't get free from the closed guard. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Garcia is looking for a triangle but Julio pushes his legs off easily.
Julio trying to stand up but can't free himself from Garcia's guard. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
That was a close round but I would say that Don Julio will probably get the nod. That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.
Julio lands with a straight right. Garcia didn't see that one coming. Garcia shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Julio as he avoids it easily. Garcia scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground. Garcia is trying to control. Julio wants to improve his position but can't escape this time. Julio is in a tricky position but he's been working on his transitions down at Midnight MMA, so we'll see if he gets out of it. Garcia looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Julio wants to get back to his feet. Garcia is looking to advance position but Julio won't allow it.
That's one minute gone in the round. Garcia throwing shots but Julio is blocking nicely. Garcia is working for a submission of some sort.
Garcia is looking for the mount but instead finds himself back in full guard. Garcia trying to control the position from guard on top but Julio is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Garcia content to stall in guard here.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Garcia pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Julio is keeping the position for now. Garcia pushing down on Julio's thigh, trying to pass to half guard. He's managed it... Nice work. Julio regains full guard, whilst avoiding punches from Garcia. Garcia is looking to advance position but Julio has hit a scissor sweep - now he's on top in mount!
That's three minutes gone in the round. Garcia is desperately trying to improve his position but Julio has a good base and remains in mount. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Julio wants to get back to his feet but Garcia is holding on tight.
Garcia can't escape the position.
Julio get's back to his feet. Julio scores with a crisp jab that stopped Garcia in his tracks.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Garcia chopped to the floor by a nice leg kick but he springs right back up before Julio can pounce on him.
Nice uppercut there from Julio. Julio punishes Garcia's body with a nice straight punch. Julio connects with a slap. Keep your fist closed son. Julio lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Julio scores with a head kick.
Julio misses with a looping left. Don Julio is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs. Garcia gets cracked with a nice right hand there by Julio. Don Julio is winning the standup battle so far. As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action. Garcia dives in for a single leg takedown but Julio sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage. Garcia is working for takedown but Julio is calmly controlling the position for now. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
That was a close second round but I would say that Don Julio will probably get the nod. That's time! Julio's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. This is the final round!
Garcia takes a shot right to the liver - Bas would have been proud of that punch. Julio cracks Garcia with an open hand slap. Garcia shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Julio wants to get back to his feet. Garcia wants to pass to mount but Julio is defending the position. Julio looks like he's trying to stand up.
That's one minute gone in the round. Garcia trying to mount his opponent but Julio defends it. Julio is staying active underneath Garcia, who seems content to just control the action from this position. Garcia is looking to advance position but Julio won't allow it. Garcia frees up his trapped foot and advances to mount. Julio is looking to get back to his feet - it's going to be hard from this position. The referee warns Julio that he has to improve his position here as he takes two more clean shots to the head.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Julio wants to try and get back to his feet. In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Garcia working his ground and pound in the gym. He isn't landing a great percentage of his ground strikes so far though. Garcia wants to finish this one by submission but Julio is holding onto his waist, trying to prevent any attacks from Garcia. Garcia throwing sloppy strikes, which aren't doing any damage. Garcia throws some wild stikes that Julio manages to avoid easily.
Garcia trying to control but Julio is having none of it. Julio wants to use the cage to get back to his feet here.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Julio defends a decent attempt at a guillotine from Garcia. Garcia has hold of an arm here, looking to extend it. He's committed to the armbar attempt here! Will he get it?! Yes! Julio is forced to tap!
