Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
7 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Ernie Miller! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
3 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Jason Pops! The judges for this bout are Yukihiro Shimada, Ren Mimura and Hirohito Nitta.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Pops throws a lazy uppercut
and Miller counters with a nice uppercut.
It looks like Jason Pops has been cut. Pops misses with a takedown attempt - Miller sprawls well and throws a nice strike on the way out which just misses. Pops looks frustrated there after his takedown attempt is stuffed easily. Pops moves out of range as Miller throws a body kick.
Pops takes a push kick to the midsection and stumbles backwards. Pops has a takedown stuffed. Ernie Miller has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jason Pops. Jab, jab by Pops - just one landing.
It looks like Ernie Miller has been cut. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Miller throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Pops. Pops throws a shot to the body.
Miller loads up on a big right hand but Pops slips the punch.
That's one minute gone in the round. Miller motions for Pops to come forward. Miller throws a leg kick but it misses it's target. Pops jabs Miller to the body, keeping him at a distance. Miller keeping a good distance there, avoiding the body shot.
Pops has done a lot of speed work in the buildup to this fight. Nice body punch from Pops. Pops throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land. Miller scores with a kick to the body.
Pops takes one to the chin there. Miller fakes a head punch and goes low to the body. Nicely done. Ernie Miller is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs. Pops moves out of range of the leg kick from Miller. Pops checks a leg kick nicely. Miller throws a body kick but he was well out of range there. Miller pulls out of a head kick attempt.
Ernie Miller seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Miller throws a nice head kick!
Pops misses with a straight right. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Pops decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard. Miller on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Miller tries to get out of the position. Miller avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Pops. Miller is not content to let Pops control the position. Pops looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Miller with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position. Pops thows a huge punch but Miller dodges it nicely.
Pops tries to pass the half guard into mount. Miller knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt. Pops has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan. Pops throwing shots but they're hitting the canvas more than the man.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Pops trying to control from half guard but Miller is working away. The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Pops connects with a nice short shot to Miller's temple. Miller is refusing to be controlled, as Pops sits in half guard. The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Miller is in a tricky position but he's been working on his transitions down at Team Butcher Gym , so we'll see if he gets out of it. It looks like Pops might be adopting somewhat of a lay and pray gameplan here, which I'm sure won't go down too well with the paying fans in attendance... Or the ring announcers come to think of it. Pops with the ground and pound but Miller uses the opportunity to regain guard.
That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight. Pops throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Miller works some decent striking defense from the bottom. Pops working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.
The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet. Pops rushes in with a sloppy looking punch
and Miller finishes the little exchange by landing a big kick to the body. Pops avoids the body shot from Miller.
Miller tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Pops was well out of range. Poor timing from Miller. Miller takes one on the button. Miller lands a leg kick that knocks Pops off balance momentarily. Miller scores with a jab to the body. Miller tries to bum rush Pops with a series of wild strikes but Pops uses good footwork to avoid the assault. Pops uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Miller.
A combination from Pops does no damage. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
That was a close round but I would say that Ernie Miller will probably get the nod. Both fighters have cut men working on them during the interval. The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!
Miller throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Miller is looking to wear down Pops with body shots, infact he's throwing more body shots than head shots at the moment. Miller just misses with a punch to the body.
Pops misses the shot to the body. Pops lands a jab to the nose. Pops fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Pops lands a straight punch to the body, keeping Miller at a distance.
Miller misses with a looping right. Pops gets a takedown into half guard. Pops is actively looking for submissions here but good counter grappling here from Miller as he works his way to full guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Miller keeping moving, preventing Pops from controlling successfully. Pops working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage. Miller will need to keep those long limbs tucked in whilst he's on the ground, to prevent any submissions. Pops wants to control from the top but Miller keeps moving. Miller working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Pops. Pops pushes down on Miller's leg and manages to get into half guard. Pops works his way into full mount!
That's two minutes gone in the round. Pops working for a guillotine from mount but Miller is in no mood to give up. Pops thowing strikes but they're hitting the gloves, not doing any damage. Pops is thinking about an arm triangle here, looking to tighten it up before moving to side control. Miller can see it coming though and defends well with a couple of strikes to the head and some good arm positioning.
Pops can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Miller is looking to escape.
That's three minutes gone in the round. A nice elbow there by Pops. Pops looking to secure an arm triangle but Miller defends it well. Miller holding onto his opponent's waist for dear life, as Pops tries to land some strikes to get him to release his grip.
Miller blocking the ground and pound.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Miller can't escape the position.
Pops avoids the attempt from Miller to control. Jason Pops has got the better of the ground game so far. Pops with good strikes from the mount here! The referee warns Miller that he has to improve his position here as he takes two more clean shots to the head.
Ernie Miller's cut is bleeding quite badly. He's got to try and protect it.
The referee calls the doctor in to look at Ernie Miller's cut. Oh no, the doctor has called an end to the bout!
