Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Daedov Obenagovski! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Jorge Cristobal! The judges for this bout are Fedor Mirinova, Aleksei Zolotukhin and Dmitry Maklakov.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Obenagovski just misses with a punch to the body.
Obenagovski fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Obenagovski misses with a straight left. Cristobal does a little shimmy and throws a leg kick. The leg kick missed by a considerable margin though, making him look a little bit silly for doing the shimmy. Cristobal on the wrong end of a vicious looking body shot. Cristobal throws a head kick but Obenagovski moves out of range.
Jorge Cristobal seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Horrible takedown attempt by Cristobal or perhaps it was just good defense by Obenagovski, which made it look bad. Cristobal fails to land the takedown. Cristobal misses with a takedown and Obenagovski counters with a nice double leg into side control. Cristobal won't be happy with that. Daedov Obenagovski has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jorge Cristobal. Obenagovski trying to control the position but Cristobal is working away. Cristobal is looking for a sweep. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Cristobal tries to control but end up mounted... ooooh, that's bad.
That's one minute gone in the round. Cristobal is in all sorts of trouble here.
Cristobal sneaks a leg under to get to half guard. Cristobal is pressing down on Obenagovski's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Cristobal is adopting a defensive guard. Obenagovski trying to control the position from guard on top but Cristobal is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Cristobal pulls Obenagovski in to control the position. Obenagovski wants to get up but he can't break Cristobal's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here. Obenagovski knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Cristobal on the ground.
That's two minutes gone in the round. My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer. Cristobal is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. Cristobal has a closed guard, preventing Obenagovski from standing up. The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up. Obenagovski has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player. Obenagovski stays in close to Cristobal's body and controls the position.
The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity. Obenagovski definitely looks more muscular than last time we saw him fight. Obenagovski scores with a sloppy punch to the body. Not much technique there but it did the business. Daedov Obenagovski is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs. Cristobal closes this distance looking for a takedown but Obenagovski circles away. A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Cristobal. Obenagovski connects with an inside leg kick. Obenagovski lands a glancing blow to the side of Cristobal's head.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Cristobal shoots in looking for a takedown but Obenagovski manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Cristobal's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away. Obenagovski moves into range and connects with a jab. Obenagovski works Cristobal's body with a nice hook. Cristobal looks winded! A telegraphed right hand from Obenagovski misses the target. Obenagovski with a hook. Obenagovski scores with a shot to the body.
Obenagovski drops Cristobal with a hook right on the temple. He thinks about going to the ground but Cristobal looks back up at him and smiles so Obenagovski waves him back to his feet - he obviously thinks he can knock him out after that shot landed.
Cristobal is rocked! This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Cristobal with a poor takedown and Obenagovski counters with a big slam followed by a series of strikes - this one is all over!
