Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Daniel Ryan (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Tapda Mattus (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
18 - 14 - 0, fighting out of London, Daniel Ryan! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
9 - 14 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Tapda Mattus! The judges for this bout are Tiny Johnson, Stewart Dunkirk and Gwen Towbar.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Ryan misses with a looping right. Ryan throws a hook but Mattus avoids it easily. Ryan looking for a takedown here - he's got it. Ryan has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance. Ryan postures up and scores with a shot to the body and a follow up elbow to the head. Mattus manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Ryan manages to get himself to full guard.
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Ryan holds on and takes a little breather. My spies in Bi-polar Asylum inform me that Mattus has been getting involved in the gym's BJJ sparring sessions. Let's see whether that pays dividends! A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Mattus accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand. Mattus is working Ryan over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes. Mattus prevents Ryan from getting back to his feet. Ryan trying desperately to get back to his feet here but he's not having any joy at all. He's going to tire himself out if he's not careful. Ryan has been looking to land a fair amount of strikes on the ground. He might be looking to soften his opponent up in order to work for a submission. This has been an exciting period of action! Mattus is looking to work some ground and pound but Ryan has wrist control. Mattus in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time. Mattus wants to control from the top but Ryan keeps moving. Mattus prevents Ryan from getting back to his feet.
That's one minute gone in the round. Mattus cracks Ryan with a solid left hand. Mattus postures up in Ryan's guard and throws a big left but Ryan blocks it. Ryan wants to stand but Mattus is controlling the position. Mattus trying to land body shots but he keeps hitting the mat. Mattus is fighting to break Ryan's control of his arms but Ryan is doing a good job of controlling the position at the moment. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Mattus trying to control but Ryan is working from the bottom.
It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground. Ryan misses with a takedown and Mattus counters with a head kick. Mattus looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Ryan! Mattus looking to punish the body of his opponent here but Ryan is avoiding damage well.
Mattus wants to control but Ryan is keeping him busy. Mattus scores with a couple of short elbows.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Mattus fails to land a wild elbow strike.
Ryan is trying to stand back up. He's worked his way up against the cage but Mattus has just dragged him back down to the mat. An elbow from Mattus crashes against the mat.
Mattus trying to control the action but Ryan is working from the bottom. Mattus tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though. Mattus in side control, trying to ground and pound but not landing this time. Ryan sneaks out the side door and pushes Mattus away - he's back to his feet. The crowd show their appreciation for the escape. Mattus shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Ryan sprawls well. Ryan wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Mattus gets slowly back to his feet. Mattus moves out of range of the strikes.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Ryan sets himself and throws a head kick that knocks Mattus to the ground! Ryan dives into full mount looking to finish!
Mattus is rocked!
It looks like Tapda Mattus has been cut. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Ryan has hold of an arm here, looking to extend it. He's committed to the armbar attempt here! Will he get it?! Yes! Mattus is forced to tap!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:34 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Daniel Ryan! Daniel Ryan decided to go for the less than humble approach in his post fight interview, telling everyone how he is going to conquer the world. The crowd seemed to like it when really that sort of approach could have gone either way.
