Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Fabian Ray! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, James McVeigh ! The judges for this bout are Summer Carpenter, Eliza Hachem and Donatello Bradman.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Ray gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard. The referee is pacing around the two fighters - he looks like he's thinking about a standup. Ray lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard. Ray trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. Ray has to be careful here, sitting in the guard of a superior BJJ player. Ray drops back, looking for a kneebar! McVeigh looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. McVeigh looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from McVeigh ! McVeigh working the ground and pound. McVeigh cracks Ray with a big right hand but Ray just smiles back at him and invites him to have another go.
Ray tries to buck McVeigh off but McVeigh is having none of it. McVeigh working the body and head with strikes. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! McVeigh prevents Ray from escaping the position. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. McVeigh is putting a hurting on Ray here, landing some big shots from side control.
That's one minute gone in the round. McVeigh wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Ray, who protects the arm well. Ray tries to get back to half guard but can't. McVeigh tries to move into full mount but can't pass Ray's legs. Ray knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for McVeigh on the ground. Ray tries to bench press McVeigh off him but McVeigh keeps the position. McVeigh scoring with punches from side control. McVeigh connects with a decent looking elbow from side control that caused Ray some visible discomfort.
Ray is rocked! A big shot lands for McVeigh ! That's hurt Ray! Will he recover? McVeigh fires away with more strikes and the referee has to step in to stop the fight!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:53 of round 1, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). James McVeigh !
