PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Tony Martin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Caesar Baker (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Martin has a slight injury, which hopefully won't affect the fight too much. The crowd giving both fighters a great reception on their way into the arena. That's good to see.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Tony Martin!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Caesar Baker!
The judges for this bout are Konstantin Menshow, Ivan Kurochkin and Igor Prikhodko.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Martin shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Martin definitely looks more muscular than last time we saw him fight.
Baker is trying hard to land a takedown here. Martin sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.

Baker drives through and clinches with Martin against the cage.

Baker ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Baker no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.

Martin drops back looking for a leg! Baker is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Baker manages to kick Martin off! Martin jumps back into Baker's guard.

Baker is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Martin is trying to work a guillotine from the top, or something like that? Don't know how he thinks he's going to get a finish from there.
Baker keeping full guard, as Martin tries to pass.
Baker controls Martin momentarily but Martin frees himself.

Baker wants to stand and escape but Martin is having none of it.
Baker tries to strike from the bottom.

Martin drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Martin jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.

Baker is pulling down on Martin's head. It's preventing any offense from Martin, at least for the moment.
Martin trying to control the position from guard on top but Baker is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Baker bucks up whilst keeping hold of a body lock, managing to reverse the position. Now he's in top in Martin's guard.

Martin throws his legs up looking to secure a triangle. Oh, that looks pretty tight, I gotta say! Baker escapes and throws Martin's legs to the side, diving into side control!
Martin is not content to let Baker control the position.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Martin is looking for a sweep.
Baker postures up a little and throws a couple of hammerfists but they don't connect properly.
Martin tries to improve position but can't.
Martin manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Baker trying to control but Martin postures up.

Martin looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Martin is breathing heavily.
Baker has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Martin is working away from the top position though.
Baker tries to kick Martin off but Martin keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.

Martin is working for submissions here but there's nothing on.

Baker looking to work for a kimura from the bottom.

Baker is defending against the submission attempts here by Martin.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Martin is working for a submission of some sort.

Martin seems to be working for a kimura but Baker defends the submission attempt.
Baker flails away from the bottom but he's not doing any damage.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Baker is looking to improve his position.
Baker trying to control but Martin postures up.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Caesar Baker will probably get the nod.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.


Baker goes for a double leg but Martin avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Martin continues to drive forward.

Baker's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Martin tries to score a power double leg takedown but Baker sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Martin somewhat.
Tony Martin seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.

Baker fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Martin sprawls well initially but Baker persists and gets the takedown into half guard.
Baker seems content to maintain position for now, rather than mounting any offense.
Baker seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Martin does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.
The referee walks around the fighters to get a better view of the action. Baker lands a nice short elbow.
Baker thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.
Martin makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Martin.
Baker wants to control from the top but Martin keeps moving.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Martin preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.

Martin looking for subs off his back but Baker has passed one foot through into half guard.
Baker wants to free his trapped foot but Martin is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Baker really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Martin. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Martin is not content to let Baker control the position.
Baker is in a good position here but he's just trying to control... And he's not even managing to do that successfully.
Baker wants to free his trapped foot but Martin is holding on for dear life with his legs.
Baker thows a huge punch but Martin dodges it nicely.

Martin actively working from the bottom here.
The fighters are battling for position here. Martin manages to regain full guard. Nice work.

That's two minutes gone in the round.

Martin is looking to cinch up a triangle. Baker throws the leg off to one side though and gets in tight to Martin's body to avoid the submission. Martin has instead reached around Baker's neck and now has a guillotine! Oh, this is biiiig trouble! Martin arches his back and squeezes and forces the tap from his hapless opponent.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:24 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Guillotine). Tony Martin!
