Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
3 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Jon Gustafson! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of New York, Sterling Archer! The judges for this bout are Joseph Jones, Bruno Lombardi and John Kavanagh.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Gustafson looks to score with a combo but nothing lands. Gustafson displays some good footwork, moving neatly out of range as Archer throws out the jab. Archer shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat. If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup. Archer won't allow Gustafson to get back to his feet. Archer trying to control the position from guard on top but Gustafson is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Archer thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. That's one minute gone in the round. Archer passes Gustafson's left leg - he's now in half guard. Archer content to sit in half guard and control for a moment. Gustafson is refusing to be controlled, as Archer sits in half guard. Gustafson wants to get back to his feet. Archer works his foot free and advances to mount. We've been hearing good reports from Gustafson's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Archer landing strikes from the mount. Gustafson on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Gustafson tries to get out of the position. Archer sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment. Archer scores with a couple of good head shots there.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Archer landing punches. Gustafson is flailing around, obviously not happy about being mounted. Archer locks hold of one of his arms and spins for an armbar. He's got it! Gustafson is forced to tap!
