PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Shamar Jackson (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Taneli Hauki (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Jackson's ring entrance music is that housewives' favourite, Freak on a Leash. Buckle up people - heeeeeeeeeere we go!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 21 - 13 - 1, fighting out of Montreal, Shamar Jackson!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 15 - 6 - 0, fighting out of New York, Taneli Hauki!
The judges for this bout are William Peck, Alec Ball and Steve Smith.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Jackson with a nice cross.
Hauki throws a jab but it's blocked by Jackson.
Hauki stuffs a takedown. It's all about dictating where the fight takes place and Hauki wants it to stay on the feet.

Jackson misses with a wild combination.
Hauki takes a swing at Jackson's ribcage but misses.
Hauki throws a body kick that misses.
Jackson has been working on his boxing with his coaches at Montreal Fighter's Gym in the buildup to the fight.
A nice inside leg kick there by Hauki. That's going to slow Jackson down.
Hauki throws a jab but it's blocked by Jackson.

Jackson has his front leg slapped to the side - a nice low kick landing there from Hauki.

Hauki lunges in with an uppercut that skims his opponent's chin.
Jackson moves out of range of the body kick.
Jackson takes one on the chin but seems OK.
Jackson cracks Hauki with an open hand slap.
Jackson throws a left and a right that both miss
and Hauki connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle.

and Jackson counters with a nice double leg into guard.

Hauki wants to sweep but no luck.

Jackson drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Hauki manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Jackson has Hauki in his guard.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Jackson is looking for a guillotine. You can't force these things though and Hauki defends well.
Jackson wants to improve his position but instead Hauki has moved into half guard.

Jackson makes his way to full guard. A much better position for Jackson.

Jackson has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Hauki can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Jackson is looking to regain half guard here but Hauki keeps moving and retains side control.
Jackson is looking to slip a leg under and get half guard but Hauki is one step ahead and moves to full mount!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Taneli Hauki dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

Hauki stumbles momentarily as he takes a strong leg kick from Jackson.
Jackson throws a wild combination but nothing lands.
Hauki lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Jackson circles away quickly and effectively.

Jackson throws a right and a left that Hauki avoids nicely.

Hauki tries to bum rush Jackson with a series of wild strikes but Jackson uses good footwork to avoid the assault.
Hauki has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Hauki rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Jackson moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Hauki swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Hauki looking to throw a kick but he's pulled out of it.
Hauki moves his head to the side to avoid a jab but walks straight into a cross.
Hauki tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Hauki has been working his punching technique in the buildup to the fight and it appears to be paying off.
Hauki throws a hook to the side of Jackson's head but Jackson sees it coming and ducks under it beautifully.

Jackson scores with a nice one two combo and darts back out of range to avoid anything coming in the opposite direction.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Hauki lands with a nice body punch.
Hauki lands a jab-cross combination.
Hauki misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Hauki goes for a high kick. It partially lands.
Jackson moves out of range as Hauki strikes.
Hauki throws a jab when Jackson was well out of range.

and Jackson counters with a single leg into guard. Hauki didn't expect that.

Jackson is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Hauki is just riding it out for now. Jackson eventually gives up the hold.

Jackson looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

Hauki tries to get to full guard but Jackson has control of the leg.
Hauki on the receiving end of some nice ground and pound.

Jackson is working for an americana but Hauki has been sneaky and has managed to get back to half guard, whilst Jackson was thinking about the submission.
Jackson postures up in Hauki's guard and throws a big left but Hauki blocks it.
A real slowdown in the pace of the fight for a moment, as Hauki holds on and takes a little breather.
Jackson throwing strikes but missing.
Jackson throws an elbow that misses. Hauki uses the momentum to reverse the position. He's now in Jackson's guard. Nice move by Hauki!


Jackson has his foot on Hauki's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Hauki works his way back into a safe position though.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That was a close second round but I would say that Shamar Jackson will probably get the nod.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action. So, we enter the final round. Let's see if either fighter can bring us a finish, or whether we're going to the judges scorecards.

Hauki has his head snapped back a nice jab. A little nod from Hauki there as he acknowledges the shot.
Hauki takes an uppercut right on the jaw but it doesn't phase him.
Jackson bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes.
Hauki throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
Hauki uses good footwork to avoid the strikes from Jackson.
Hauki throws a lazy right hand but Jackson sees it coming a mile off and sidesteps it easily.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Jackson looks to land a combination but Hauki avoids it well.
Nice straight punches there by Jackson. You know Roy Jones Jr respects the hands of Jackson.
Hauki slips in close and lands a nice hook before moving back out of range.
Good leg kick by Hauki there. It's the ones that make that thud noise that hurt and that was an almighty thud.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
The fighters circling - Jackson throws out the jab but it was never going to land.

Taneli Hauki seems to be getting the better of the standup.

Hauki connects with a lovely jab that went straight through the gap between Jackson's hands.
Jackson tries to score a power double leg takedown but Hauki sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Jackson somewhat.

We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Jackson steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Hauki.
Sloppy strikes from Jackson. Those never looked like landing.
Jackson throws an uppercut from half a mile away. Hauki sees it coming and avoids it easily.

and Jackson counters with a three punch combo that has Hauki backing up. Hauki nods at Jackson to acknowledge the strikes.

A head kick from Hauki lands but Jackson takes it in his stride.
Hauki is looking to chop away at Jackson's legs.
Jackson is really head hunting here, hardly looking to strike to the body at all.
Jackson closes the distance and lands a one-two.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Jackson is pinned up against the cage taking some big shots here. The referee is looking closely deciding whether he should stop the fight.
Oh Jackson is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!
Jackson lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Hauki circles away quickly and effectively.
Jackson takes a swing at Hauki's ribcage but misses.
Jackson fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Hauki with a nice looking leg kick. You could hear that one land in a back row.

Hauki lands a big uppercut and Jackson crumbles to the floor! The ref thinks about stopping the fight but Jackson looks OK. Hauki waves Jackson back to his feet!
Jackson moves into range and throws a combination. A nice jab followed by a hook to the body.
Hauki lands with a nice low kick. That'll leave a bruise.

Jackson dives in and scores a takedown into Hauki's guard.

Jackson is looking to advance position but Hauki has hit a scissor sweep - now he's on top in mount!

The crowd applaud the fighters' efforts here as the round comes to an end.
Hauki can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Jackson is looking to escape.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Shamar Jackson.
I think Jackson has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
