PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Jack Douglas (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rick Patton (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Jack Douglas!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 14 - 8 - 0, fighting out of New York, Rick Patton!
The judges for this bout are Dean Styles, Bruno Lombardi and John Roberts.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Patton takes a solid shot to the body. That one hurt him but he's trying not to show it.
Douglas drops his hands momentarily and Patton takes advantage with a crisp shot to the head.


It looks like Jack Douglas has been cut.
Rick Patton seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Douglas fakes a couple of low kicks, before throwing one on the third attempt. It connects and Patton has to reset his feet before getting ready to engage.
Douglas slips a straight right by Patton.
Patton getting the better of the striking in that exchange.
Patton misses with a looping left.
Douglas moves away from the strike by Patton.
Douglas staying out of range there.

Patton shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Douglas napping and manages to drive through into side control!
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Douglas tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Patton wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Patton is looking to take a break and control but Douglas is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Patton sitting in side control, looking to soften his opponent up with elbows and hammerfists but Douglas is avoiding damage well and looking to escape the position.
Patton lands an elbow.
Douglas gets back to half guard.
Patton tries to pass the half guard into mount. Douglas knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.
Douglas is concentrating on defense, preventing Patton from advancing position.

Patton thows a wild elbow that connects with the canvas.

Douglas is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Patton pulls his head out easily.
Patton tries to pass the half guard into mount. Douglas knows what he's doing though and prevents the attempt.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Patton wants to pass to mount but Douglas is defending the position.
Douglas desperately trying to maintain half guard.
Patton really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Douglas. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Patton wants to pass the guard but Douglas is defending well.
Douglas manages to get to full guard.
In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Patton working his ground and pound in the gym. He isn't landing a great percentage of his ground strikes so far though.
Douglas is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control.
Douglas tries to land a sweep but no joy.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Douglas tries to land a front kick but Patton steps back. That was a bit too telegraphed.
Patton throws a hook but Douglas avoids it easily.
Patton throws a big shot that misses.
Patton paws at his opponent with the jab and then lunges in with a straight, right on the button.
Wow, both these guys are really going for it!
Douglas slips a straight right by Patton.
Douglas moves forwards but Patton connects with a nice, crisp jab.
Patton moves out of range of the leg kick from Douglas.
Patton missing with a left hand there. Douglas was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.
Patton misses with a hook.
Patton misses the jab.
Douglas scores with a leg kick.
Patton with a lazy takedown attempt
and Douglas counters with a body kick that brings a smile to the face of both fighters.
A swing and a miss from Patton.
Patton dives in for a single leg takedown but Douglas sprawls and the fighters end up clinched against the cage.
I was talking to Douglas's coach per-fight and he was telling me that they'd been working on the clinch in the runup to this fight.
Patton has dropped down and is looking to force the takedown but it's defended by Douglas after a bit of a struggle.
Jack Douglas has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Rick Patton.
Douglas lands a body punch.
Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show!

Patton has dropped down and is working for a takedown. Douglas is trying to keep an underhook but Patton manages to get the takedown into half guard.

Douglas moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard.

Douglas is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.

Douglas keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action.
Patton tries to roll over but Douglas keeps him under control.

Douglas seems like he's working for an arm triangle here. He's freed his trapped foot and he's rotating nicely. Patton is in big trouble! He's tapping out! This one is aaaaaaaaaaaall over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:52 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Arm Triangle). Jack Douglas!
An out of breath Jack Douglas thanked his loyal fans in his post fight interview, giving them credit for his success over the course of his career.
