Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
23 - 10 - 0, fighting out of Helsinki, Nikola Veljanovski! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
11 - 4 - 0, fighting out of St Petersburg, Shamil Astakhov! The judges for this bout are Valeri Chadov, Aleksandr Martynov and Aleksei Zolotukhin.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Veljanovski is looking to clinch but Astakhov is avoiding it.
Astakhov gets tackled into the cage by Veljanovski. Veljanovski maintains the clinch. Veljanovski lands with a right to the head. Astakhov tries to score a body lock takedown but Veljanovski shows good agility there to stay on his feet. Veljanovski misses with a shot to the kidneys.
Veljanovski breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat. Nikola Veljanovski seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Veljanovski looking for a takedown here - he's got it. We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake. Astakhov keeping moving, preventing Veljanovski from controlling successfully. Astakhov is working the butterfly guard. He manages to land a nice scissor sweep and is now in half guard on the top. Nice move.
Astakhov looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Astakhov thows a huge punch but Veljanovski dodges it nicely.
That's one minute gone in the round. Astakhov sitting and controlling from the half guard. Astakhov not landing any meaningful shots this time. Veljanovski on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Veljanovski tries to get out of the position. Veljanovski wants to control but Astakhov is keeping busy.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Astakhov wants to pass the guard but Veljanovski is defending well. Astakhov seems like he's working for an arm triangle here. He's freed his trapped foot and he's rotating nicely. Veljanovski is in big trouble! He's tapping out! This one is aaaaaaaaaaaall over!
