PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a super heavyweight MMA rules bout between Matt Black (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Keijiro Maeda (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Chooooooooon! I think Black might be my favorite fighter, now he's come out to Not Afraid - Eminen. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the super heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 5 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Matt Black!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 6 - 8 - 1, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Keijiro Maeda!
The judges for this bout are Matheus Silva, Mauricio Rocha and Alexandre Firmino.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Black shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Maeda manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Maeda can't keep his opponent in guard - Black advances to half guard, no doubt looking to mount.

Black stands up from half guard.

Black shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Maeda is trying to defend but Black finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Black seems to be looking for submissions.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Black takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.
Black wants to pass to mount but Maeda is defending the position.

Maeda is defending against the submission attempts here by Black.

Black is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, Maeda has managed to free his arm - good work.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Still in half guard, Black seems content to control.

Black is looking for a kimura but Maeda is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Black to get the leverage.
Black stalling.

Black is working for a kimura but Maeda is defending it quite comfortably.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Black postures up and decides to stand up, from the half guard. The ref calls for Maeda to stand up.

Black closes the distance and gets a double leg, slamming Maeda to the mat! Maeda manages to get full guard.

Black gets to his feet - Maeda follows without any prompting.

Black shoots in and scores a nice double leg takedown into half guard.
Maeda wants to control but Black passes into side.

That's four minutes gone in the round.

Black tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though.

Black tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Black has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action!



A momentary lapse in concentration from Maeda enables Black to shoot in and score with a neat double leg. Maeda manages to secure a closed guard as the fighters hit the mat.
Black controlling from the top position.
Maeda not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Black stands up from Maeda's guard - Black perhaps looking for a knockout.

Black throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Maeda was covering up waiting for the punch and Black finishes the takedown easily into guard.

Black controls from within his opponent's guard.
We've been hearing good reports from Black's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today.

Maeda is working an open guard so Black takes the opportunity to get back to his feet.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

Black throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Maeda was covering up waiting for the punch and Black finishes the takedown easily into guard.
Black advances to half guard.

Black seems to be looking for submissions.
Black is pressing down on Maeda's thigh, looking to free his foot. Maeda is holding on for now.

Black stands, ready to strike. The ref makes him back up and allows Maeda to get to his feet.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Black.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Black looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Black decides to stand back up. Black steps back and let's Maeda get back to his feet.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Black gets a takedown into half guard.
It really doesn't seem like the step up in weight is hurting Black here at all. He's more than holding his own against the bigger man.

Black stands up from half guard... He's had enough of that ground malarky for the time being.

Black throws a loose over hand right and dives in with a double leg takedown. Maeda tries to sprawl but it's too late and the fighters hit the mat. Black is in Maeda's guard.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Maeda keeping moving, preventing Black from controlling successfully.
Black is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Matt Black dominated that second round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!



Black shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Maeda is trying to defend but Black finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further.

Black is trying a forearm choke… I don't think that's going to do much at this level of the game.

Black is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Maeda defends it well.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

Black is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Maeda sees it coming and defends easily.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

Black is looking for an arm triangle, whilst trying to pass to side control. Maeda doesn't seem that keen to cooperate though. No luck this time Black.

Black shoots in and bounces Maeda off the cage to secure the takedown into guard.

Keijiro Maeda has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Matt Black is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Black seems to have a rather negative gameplan on the ground. He seems keen to just score the takedown and hold down Maeda for as long as he can get away with.

And that's the end of the fight!

Well Black has outscored his opponent in every aspect of the fight today. Only a scarily incompetent judge or two will keep him from a well deserved win... Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
