7 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Jay Matsuo! The judges for this bout are Matheus Silva, Thiago Cunha and Felipe Paraventi.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Matsuo pushes forward with a 1-2 combination that forces Churchill back to the cage. Matsuo follows up with a solid lead hook to the liver.
It looks like Hugo Churchill has been cut. We've been hearing reports that Churchill has been drilling takedowns in recent sessions so let's see if that has an impact on the result of this fight. Matsuo darts in and clinches Churchill up against the cage. Matsuo manages to break the clinch.
Matsuo shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Churchill as he jumps to the side. Matsuo with a lazy takedown attempt and Churchill counters with a takedown into side control. Matsuo avoids any damage from the ground and pound of Churchill . Matsuo prevents Churchill from moving into mount. Matsuo defending against the ground and pound. Churchill wants to lay and pray for a moment but Matsuo keeps working. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Matsuo defending against the ground and pound. That's one minute gone in the round. Churchill tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though. Churchill trying to control the action but Matsuo is working from the bottom. Matsuo gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard. Matsuo is trying to stand.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action. Churchill with a momentary lay and pray from half guard. Churchill thows a huge punch but Matsuo dodges it nicely.
Churchill wants to lay and pray for a moment but Matsuo keeps working. Matsuo has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Churchill is working away from the top position though.
The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet. Matsuo shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Churchill as he jumps to the side. Hugo Churchill has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jay Matsuo. Matsuo closes the distance and clinches up with Churchill , looking for a takedown. Matsuo pushes Churchill against the cage but Churchill circles to the side and manages to break the clinch. Matsuo tries to close the distance and clinch up but Churchill swats him away and circles back towards the center.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Matsuo fails with a takedown attempt. Churchill shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Matsuo manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage. Matsuo trying to control the position.
Churchill seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Matsuo controls Churchill momentarily but Churchill frees himself. Churchill trying to control the position from guard on top but Matsuo is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work. Matsuo is looking for a triangle but Churchill pushes his legs off easily.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Churchill sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed Matsuo's guard. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Hugo Churchill dominated that round. The cut man is working on Hugo Churchill 's cut. That's time! Back to the action!
Churchill shoots in for a takedown but Matsuo shows good takedown defense. A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Matsuo. Matsuo misses with a wild body shot. Matsuo throws a push kick but Churchill slaps the foot to one side. Matsuo fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Churchill manages to avoid it. Churchill is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Matsuo can do to turn this around? Churchill fails to land the takedown. Churchill circles away from the clinch attempt.
Matsuo's coach down at Franklin D. Bluth Memorial Supergym was telling us pre-fight that they have been working on Matsuo's balance. Obviously they view that as a key factor in the outcome of this fight. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Churchill shoots in for a takedown but Matsuo shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Hugo Churchill . That's going to take a lot out of him. Matsuo gets the takedown into side control.
That's one minute gone in the round. Matsuo working the head and body with strikes. Matsuo tries to move to mount but Churchill blocks the move with his legs. Churchill wings away with a couple of strikes but they don't land. Matsuo tries to stand but Churchill is controlling his head. Churchill is looking for a sweep. Matsuo working the ground and pound but he's contacting the mat, not the fighter.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena. Matsuo is putting a hurting on Churchill here, landing some big shots from side control. Matsuo has knee on belly momentarily but Churchill bucks him off and regains half guard. Churchill moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard. Churchill wants to sweep but no luck. Churchill is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent. Churchill working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Matsuo.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Matsuo pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Churchill is keeping the position for now. Churchill seems keen to control rather than go for a submission, at least for now.
The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity. Jay Matsuo seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Matsuo tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Churchill paws at him with a jab and circles away. Churchill avoids a punch combination nicely.
Matsuo gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Churchill to score an easy takedown into full guard. Churchill content to stall in guard here.

Matsuo utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound. Churchill wants to control from the top but Matsuo keeps moving. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Matsuo has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Jay Matsuo showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards. The cut man is working on Hugo Churchill 's cut. That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business. This is the final round!

That's two minutes gone in the round. Churchill lands an elbow that was bordering on illegal but the referee lets it go with a warning. Churchill throws an elbow from mount that misses. Lucky escape for Matsuo because Churchill loaded up on that one. Churchill avoids the attempt from Matsuo to control. Churchill throwing sloppy strikes, which aren't doing any damage. Churchill controlling the pace for now. Matsuo swinging wildly from the bottom but he's not landing. Churchill avoids the attempt from Matsuo to control.

Hugo Churchill overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far. Matsuo is in a horrible position here, under a barrage of strikes, he's managing to avoid any damage.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Matsuo working to try and regain half guard.
You get the feeling that Matsuo really doesn't like being in this position too much.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Churchill misses with a series of strikes from mount. He'll no doubt be working on his ground and pound when he gets back to the gym.
