Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
10 - 13 - 0, fighting out of New York, Hans Gruber! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
4 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Alex Garcia! The judges for this bout are Robert Douchet, Ian Loll and Trevor Gratis.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Garcia rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Gruber moves out of range and avoids them all easily. Garcia looks for a takedown but Gruber sprawls well. Garcia lands with a thumping leg kick.
Garcia throws a right hand that Gruber ducks under and follows up with a left that Gruber also avoids with ease. Gruber connects with a nice looking jab.
No luck for Garcia with that takedown attempt. Garcia throws a predictable looking body shot
and Gruber counters with a one-two to the body. Garcia looks winded! Gruber connects with a looping right hand.
Gruber misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Garcia misses with a kick to the body and Gruber counters with a lovely shot to the body. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Gruber bobbing and weaving well here. And he's unloaded with a massive right hand that drops Garcia! He dives into his guard looking to finish!
Garcia is rocked! Gruber stands and throws Garcia's legs to the side, diving into side control. Garcia is still in real trouble! Can Gruber finish him?
That's one minute gone in the round. Gruber trying to control the action but Garcia is working from the bottom. Garcia seems to have recovered his senses. Gruber working the head with strikes. Gruber cracks Garcia with an elbow. That is naaassty. Gruber landing with strikes to the head and body from side control. Gruber working the body and head with strikes. Gruber wants to lay and pray for a moment but Garcia keeps working. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Gruber lands a decent elbow from side control. Gruber landing a few strikes.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Gruber stands up and we're back to a striking position. Gruber closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Gruber just content to control the position. Gruber has worked his way into a potential kimura here. Garcia is trying to get out of the position but his squirming has just got him deeper into trouble. Gruber yanks on the arm and Garcia is forced to tap due to a very painful looking submission! Nice work by Gruber.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:42 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Kimura). Hans Gruber! During a confident post fight interview, Hans Gruber thanked all his fans. He seemed very genuine when describing how motivated his fans keep him.
