PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Ian Mackaye (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Sam Akash (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Ian Mackaye looks tired to me. Hopefully he has got enough gas left in the tank to put in a good performance.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 4 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Ian Mackaye!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Sam Akash!
The judges for this bout are , Timothy Bukovac and Frank Antenori.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Akash decides to change it up a bit and drives through with a nice takedown into half guard.
Mackaye looks exhausted already! Oh dear, he should have come in in better shape than this!

Akash is looking for a kimura but Mackaye is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Akash to get the leverage.
Mackaye is trying to maintain the position but Akash is very close to passing his half guard.
Akash perhaps working for something from half guard, or maybe not. It looks like he's just sitting there.
Akash's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
Mackaye is not content to let Akash control the position.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Akash passes the guard and advances to mount!

That's one minute gone in the round.
The referee warns Mackaye that he has to improve his position here as he takes two more clean shots to the head.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Let's hope that Akash has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

Akash has control of Mackaye's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Mackaye regains control of the situation pretty easily.
The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.

My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.

Mackaye might be looking to lock onto one of his opponent's long limbs for a submission, whilst we're on the ground.

Akash tucks in and makes sure he doesn't lose the dominant position.
The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Akash cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Akash wants to control the pace but Mackaye is squirming around nicely.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Sam Akash dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Mackaye misses with a takedown attempt

and Akash counters by clinching up.
Mackaye is looking to break free of the clinch but Akash has double underhooks.

Akash jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Mackaye walks away with a smile on his face. Akash gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head.

Akash gets a takedown into half guard.
Akash has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Akash looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.

Akash is stalling here. Mackaye is in no mood to hang around though. He's locked up a kimura from the bottom! Akash seems to be keeping calm but he's forced to roll out of the hold and Mackaye has ended up in side control on the top. Nice work.
Akash parries the strikes from Mackaye easily there. Mackaye is wary of posturing up too much because it might enable Akash to escape.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Akash can do anything to dispel that myth.

Sam Akash has got the better of the ground game so far.
Akash manages to work his way to half guard, despite Mackaye's best efforts.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Akash is continuing to stall.

Akash wants to control but Mackaye is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Akash slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work.

Mackaye drops back looking for a leg! Akash is in trouble here! The fighters roll with the hold and Akash manages to kick Mackaye off! Mackaye jumps back into Akash's guard.

Mackaye throws a strike but Akash rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Akash in full guard, throwing the ground and pound. No damage this time.

Akash has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Mackaye is proving hard to escape from.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Akash pressing down on his opponent's thigh, looking to pass guard. Mackaye is keeping the position for now.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.
Mackaye throws a series of punches but Akash moves out of range.

Akash looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Mackaye!
Akash is staying tight to Mackaye's torso, preventing him from escaping.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Akash is looking to take a break and control but Mackaye is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Sam Akash showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
Well, the break between rounds is over. Let's get back to the scrappin! This is the final round!



Mackaye gets caught on his heels momentarily as he allows Akash to score an easy takedown into full guard.
Akash wants to get up but he can't break Mackaye's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.

Akash is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
We've been informed that Akash has been working hard on his conditioning in the buildup to the fight.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Mackaye avoiding any damage from the ground and pound.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
Akash connects nicely with a jab. Noted by the judges no doubt.
Ian Mackaye seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Akash tries to clinch there but Mackaye circles away.
Akash tries a head kick but it misses.
Ian Mackaye is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Akash fails with an attempt to clinch.
Akash fails miserably with a takedown attempt.
Mackaye dives in and grabs Akash's left leg, looking for a takedown. Akash pushes down on Mackaye's head and hops out.

Akash lands a couple of digs.

Akash postures up and lands a big shot to Mackaye's brow.


Mackaye is rocked!
Mackaye seems to have improved his submission grappling technique since last time we saw him. Let's see if he can pull off a submission.
Akash stands and throws Mackaye's legs to the side, diving into side control.
Oh Mackaye is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!!
Akash controlling the position from side mount.
Akash wants to stand but Mackaye has his arm trapped.
Akash taking a breather here.

Akash has hold of Mackaye's arm here. He's working for an Americana. It looks like he might have it! Mackaye tries to escape but he's just digging himself in deeper - Akash cranks the arm and Mackaye screams in pain! The ref makes a decision and ends the fight before the tap - no complains from Mackaye, who is just happy to have his arm attached to his body.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:41 of round 3, we have a winner by way of Submission (Americana). Sam Akash!
