PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Major Mcconnell (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jon Smith (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 2 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Major Mcconnell!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Jon Smith!
The judges for this bout are Frank Antenori, Timothy Bukovac and Don Winkell.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Smith closes the distance and clinches.
A real battle for position is taking place between these two warriors.

Smith is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Mcconnell can't fight it off and eventually Smith manages to take the fight to the floor. Mcconnell looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Smith's corner is telling him to maintain position.
Smith stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Mcconnell swivels though and keeps the full guard.
Smith content to stall in guard here.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Mcconnell can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Smith controls the pace.
Mcconnell controls Smith momentarily but Smith frees himself.
Smith controlling from the guard. I say controlling but really, he's stalling.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.

Smith shoots in for a takedown and gets it. Let's see what he's got on the mat.
Mcconnell can't do much from the bottom at the moment, as Smith controls the pace.

Mcconnell had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Smith defends it easily.
Smith controlling from the top position.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Smith really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Mcconnell. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Mcconnell wants to stand and escape but Smith is having none of it.

The ref stands the fighters back up due to a lack of activity.

Smith shoots in from a long way out. He's driving through with the takedown attempt and he eventually gets it, landing in Mcconnell's guard.
Smith trying to control but Mcconnell is working from the bottom.
Smith not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.

Mcconnell kicks Smith off and gets to his feet.

Mcconnell has taken the fight to the clinch.

Smith tightens his grip and picks Mcconnell up, before dumping him to the ground. Mcconnell manages to land in guard.

Mcconnell wants to sweep but no luck.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jon Smith dominated that round.
The minute break is over - no more time for sponges and pep talks - back to the action!



Smith scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground.
Jon Smith has got the better of the ground game so far.
Smith is pressing down on Mcconnell's thigh, looking to free his foot. Mcconnell is holding on for now.
Smith has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Smith performing his best blanket impression for a moment.
Smith trying to control the action but Mcconnell is working from the bottom.

Smith takes a deep breath and rests his weight momentarily on top of his opponent, to control the position.

Let's hope that Smith has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

Mcconnell has managed to clinch.

Mcconnell ties up his opponent against the cage and manages to drag the fight down to the ground. Mcconnell no doubt will be looking to work submissions from his guard.

Smith content to stall in guard here.
Smith is continuing to stall.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

Smith shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Mcconnell napping and manages to drive through into side control!

That's four minutes gone in the round.
Mcconnell is not content to let Smith control the position.
Smith wants to take a breather but Mcconnell manages to regain guard - a lesson learnt for Smith.

Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Smith is looking to pass into half guard but Mcconnell pushes him away with his feet and jumps on top - now Mcconnell is in guard.

And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Jon Smith showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action. This is the final round!



Mcconnell closes the distance and clinches.

Smith has picked Mcconnell up - he's going for a ride! Smith dumps his opponent to the mat with a thud and settles into half guard.
Mcconnell wants to control but Smith is keeping busy and won't allow it.
Smith content to control rather than advance.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Smith's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
More stalling from Smith.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

Mcconnell has closed the distance and engaged Smith in a clinch.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
My god... these two guys really need to pick up the pace or everyone will leave to go get a beer.
A short right hand to the side of the head by Mcconnell.

Smith has hold of one of Mcconnell's legs. Mcconnell is fighting the takedown attempt but Smith gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard.
Smith trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
Smith not doing a lot at the moment. He'll have to show some more aggression or the fight will get stood up.
Mcconnell keeping moving, preventing Smith from controlling successfully.
Smith must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
Smith working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage.

Jon Smith is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight.

Mcconnell working for a triangle but Smith defends it easily.
Smith is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

Smith stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Mcconnell swivels though and keeps the full guard.
