Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Jon Hess (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Apollo Gutz (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Hess comes to the cage accompanied by Demiurge. Over to our ring announcer for the fighter introductions!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the heavyweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
25 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Jon Hess! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
12 - 4 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Apollo Gutz! The judges for this bout are Steve Montenegro, John Roberts and Chad Campbell.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Gutz shapes like he's going to throw a leg kick but settles back down. Hess will need to close the distance a bit before he attacks - that leg kick was thrown from too far away.
Hess misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Gutz throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Gutz shoots in with a lovely double leg takedown. Hess manages to land in full guard to minimise the damage. Hess utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound. In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Gutz working his ground and pound in the gym. He isn't landing a great percentage of his ground strikes so far though. Gutz wants to control from the top but Hess keeps moving. Hess is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Gutz is controlling him. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Gutz advances position into side control! The strikes coming from Gutz are missing the target in this wave of attacks.
That's one minute gone in the round. Hess struggling a bit here. Gutz throws a strike aimed at the side of Hess's head but Hess avoids it well. Gutz is putting a hurting on Hess here, landing some big shots from side control. Gutz landing strikes. Gutz tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though. The referee tells the fighters to keep busy.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Gutz throwing ground and pound but whilst doing so, he forgets to control position and Hess works his way back to half guard. Good composure under pressure. Hess is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though. Gutz controlling the pace. Hess is refusing to be controlled, as Gutz sits in half guard. Gutz wants to work for an arm triangle but Hess is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Gutz is thwarting Hess's attempts to control the position. If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup. Gutz sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Hess defending well though. Gutz not throwing his punches with enough precision this time.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. Hess looking to land some kicks to the body here.

It looks like Apollo Gutz has been cut. Hess misses with an uppercut. Gutz saw that one coming. Gutz wings a very wild body shot but it does the job and lands to the midsection. Gutz misses with a body shot.

That's four minutes gone in the round. Gutz does a little shimmy and throws a leg kick. The leg kick missed by a considerable margin though, making him look a little bit silly for doing the shimmy. Gutz takes a jab right on the kisser.
Gutz's corner calls for a 1-2. Gutz obliges with the 1 part as he scores the single shot and moves back out of range.
It looks like Jon Hess has been cut. Gutz throws a body shot but no joy. Gutz scoring well with a low kick there.
Hess is looking to land body kicks. Hess uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Gutz.
We've been told by Hess's head coaches at House of 1000 Corpses that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight. Gutz moves into range and lands a nice leg kick. The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Gutz moves out of range of the strikes. Hess throws a lazy body kick so Gutz counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility. Hess avoiding any damage from the ground and pound. Gutz has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan. Gutz connects with a couple of short punches. A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Gutz accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

and Gutz counters with a nice double leg into side control. Hess won't be happy with that. Hess manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu! Gutz wants to get back to full guard. Gutz is still trying to improve position. Hess trying to control the action but Gutz is working from the bottom. Hess is figuring out what he wants to do next. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Gutz has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Hess is working away from the top position though. Gutz is looking to improve his position.

It looks like he might be successful but at the last minute Hess jumps into side control! Gutz is looking to regain half guard here but Hess keeps moving and retains side control. Gutz has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
That's two minutes gone in the round. A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace. Gutz manages to get one leg in to regain half guard. The referee calls for the fighters to work.
Gutz is controlling Hess's position as best he can from this difficult position.
The referee decides to stand the fighters back up. Hess motions for Gutz to come forward. Hess throws a leg kick but it misses it's target. Gutz feints with a shoulder and throws a nice leg kick to Hess's calf. Gutz throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Hess misses with a body kick. Gutz shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Hess sprawls well. Hess wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Gutz gets slowly back to his feet.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Gutz digs a good body shot into Hess's ribs. Gutz throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Hess. Hess throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle. Hess looks to land a body kick but Gutz moved away. Hess swings and misses with a hook to the body.
Gutz fails to land the takedown. Gutz is throwing a lot of body shots here, looking to wear down Hess rather than just go for the knockout. Gutz looking to take his opponent's legs away with the low kicks.

Gutz has a nice red mark on his side after a thudding body kick by Hess. Gutz walks into a stiff left hand from Hess. Jon Hess is winning the standup battle so far. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Hess throws out a token jab with nothing on it. Hess looks to land a body kick but Gutz moved away. Gutz throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.

Gutz throwing strikes but missing, from side control. Gutz landing a few strikes. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Hess struggling a bit here. Hess is being controlled here. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
That's one minute gone in the round. Gutz throws an elbow but Hess slips to the side and avoids it well. Gutz misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.
Gutz is trying to ground and pound but Hess uses the momentary lack of control by Gutz to regain half guard. Hess keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound. Gutz keeping composed on the top, looking to control the action. Gutz throwing punches and elbows but they're not doing any damage.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless. Gutz is keeping good posture, landing some ground and pound. Gutz not throwing his punches with enough precision this time. Gutz trying to pass the guard but Hess defending well. Gutz thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Hess's head. The referee must be thinking about standing these guys back up. Gutz wants to free his trapped foot but Hess is holding on for dear life with his legs.
The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet. Gutz connects with a single shot there. Nice body punch from Gutz. Hess throws the kick towards the body but Gutz avoids it. Gutz scores with a leg kick.
That's three minutes gone in the round. A low kick from Hess is predictable there and Gutz counters with a takedown into side control. Hess is trying to get back to half guard. He's pushing on Gutz's leg. He's managed it. Nice work. Gutz tries to pass to full mount but Hess defends it. Hess avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Gutz. A looping hook to the body misses from Gutz. Hess does a little dance to reset his feet. Jon Hess seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Hess lands a leg kick that knocks Gutz off balance momentarily. Hess scores with a straight right hand, right through his opponent's guard. A swing and a miss from Hess. Gutz shoots in for a takedown but Hess shows good takedown defense. Hess bobs and weaves and unloads with a good uppercut. A telegraphed right hand from Hess misses the target. and Hess counters with a head kick. A head kick misses from Gutz. Gutz looks to land a left hand but Hess moved out of range nicely. Gutz lands a vicious shot with the stealth of a sniper and the strength of a viper. Are vipers that strong? I can think of lots of things that are stronger than a viper - not many rhyme with sniper though.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so! Hess just misses with a punch to the body.

Gutz wants to lay and pray for a moment but Hess keeps working.

Apollo Gutz is fighting for a decision - hopefully he's judged it right and he's actually winning the fight. Gutz wants to control but Hess is keeping busy and won't allow it. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Gutz is pressing down on Hess's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it. Gutz trying to control the position.
