PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Grant Benton (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Dave Spiteri (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The crowd seem to be enjoying Spiteri's choice of entrance music: AC/DC -TNT. These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 13 - 8 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Grant Benton!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 10 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Dave Spiteri!
The judges for this bout are Jack Bonds, Frank Antenori and Timothy Bukovac.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Benton missing with a left hand there. Spiteri was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.
Benton misses with a wild body shot.
Spiteri misses with an uppercut.
We've been hearing reports that Benton has been drilling takedowns in recent sessions so let's see if that has an impact on the result of this fight.
Horrible takedown attempt by Benton or perhaps it was just good defense by Spiteri, which made it look bad.

Benton tries to sprawl but Spiteri drives through with a takedown into half guard.
In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Spiteri working his ground and pound in the gym. He isn't landing a great percentage of his ground strikes so far though.
It looks like Spiteri is going to stand back up.

Boom, another hit is landed. "You're gunna get knocked out" taunts Spiteri, as that shot connected.

A decent looking cross lands there for Benton.
Benton fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Spiteri manages to avoid it.
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Benton tries to check a leg kick but that clearly hurt him.
Spiteri uses good footwork to get in and out and land a nice right hand before Benton has time to react.

Spiteri fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Benton manages to avoid it.

OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.


Spiteri scores with the left hand. Benton knows he should have avoided that one.
Spiteri throws a looping overhand right but Benton ducks down to avoid it.

Benton is the aggressor but that punch slipped nicely by Spiteri.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

Benton chopped to the floor by a nice leg kick but he springs right back up before Spiteri can pounce on him.

The two fighters exchange a few words. I couldn't hear what they were saying but maybe it's more fun if you make it up yourself. Spiteri connects with a nice short shot to Benton's temple.

Spiteri is sitting in close to Benton's body. Benton has gone for a guillotine from the bottom. Oh damn, that looks pretty tight! Spiteri is panicking - it looks like this one could be all over! Yes, Spiteri is tapping! That was a very nice submission by Benton.
