PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a featherweight MMA rules bout between Xiao Long Li (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Keiji Hashimoto (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Li comes to the cage accompanied by Dragon Punch!. Hashimoto is bouncing up and down as he enters the arena, backed by Holding Out For A Hero (Japanese Version). These two fighters really are very evenly matched on the feet - it will be fascinating to see who can assert themselves in that aspect of the fight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the featherweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
32 - 21 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Xiao Long Li! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
44 - 18 - 4, fighting out of Los Angeles, Keiji Hashimoto! The judges for this bout are Jack Bonds, Don Winkell and Frank Antenori.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Li throws a leg kick which misses Hashimoto's front leg but catches the back leg as Hashimoto tries to avoid it. Li fakes with a right hand and throws a good leg kick, right into the thigh. That had to hurt Hashimoto. Hashimoto lands a nice leg kick that just misses Li's sensitive parts. Hashimoto lands with an uppercut that bounces Li off the cage and back into range. Li does a little shimmy and throws a leg kick. The leg kick missed by a considerable margin though, making him look a little bit silly for doing the shimmy. Li throws a body shot but no joy. Hashimoto misses the jab. Hashimoto thuds his right hand into Li's forehead from close range. That could be painful for both fighters. Li scores with a kick to the body.
Li feints a straight left to the body, then turns around with a flashy move and hits Hashimotos jaw with a dramatic spinning back fist! Hashimoto looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Li! Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! The strikes coming from Hashimoto are missing the target in this wave of attacks. Hashimoto grinds an elbow into Li's temple. Li avoids any damage from the ground and pound of Hashimoto. Hashimoto tries to advance position but instead Li slips a leg back in to half guard. Li is in a tricky position but he's been working on his transitions down at Vicious Striking, so we'll see if he gets out of it.
That's one minute gone in the round. Hashimoto thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Li's head. Li avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Hashimoto. Hashimoto moves nicely into side control. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Hashimoto landing a few strikes. Li manages to work his way to half guard, despite Hashimoto's best efforts. Hashimoto tries to pass to full mount but Li defends it. Hashimoto sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Li defending well though.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Hashimoto not throwing his punches with enough precision this time. Li is trying to get back to full guard. Hashimoto thumps the canvas. Not on purpose obviously - he just missed Li's head. Hashimoto passes the guard and advances to mount! Li tries to reverse the position but Hashimoto maintains control. The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult. Hashimoto can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Li is looking to escape. Hashimoto putting on the heat here with some good ground and pound!
That's three minutes gone in the round. Hashimoto goes for an armbar but he's not got it… Li turns into him and now he's in Hashimoto's guard.

Hashimoto is avoiding any damage by keeping wrist control. Li trying to control the position from guard on top but Hashimoto is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Hashimoto has the superior BJJ but he's also working some ground strikes into his gameplan. Li preventing the sweep.

Li distracts Hashimoto with his right hand and drops a big elbow with his other arm. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Li is stalling in the full guard. Hashimoto looking to hit a scissor sweep but Li is one step ahead there. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Keiji Hashimoto dominated that round. That's time! Li's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.
Li catches Hashimoto with a nice straight right. He seems pissed - ooooh, it's on now! On like donkey kong! Li scores with a crisp jab that stopped Hashimoto in his tracks. A swing and a miss from Hashimoto. Hashimoto misses the shot to the body. Hashimoto has been the more effective fighter overall so far. Hashimoto misses with a jab to the body
and Li counters with a takedown into side control! That could mean trouble for Hashimoto! Hashimoto is looking for a sweep. Keiji Hashimoto has got the better of the ground game so far. Hashimoto manages to get one leg in to regain half guard. Hashimoto is staying active underneath Li, who seems content to just control the action from this position. Li sitting in half guard, looking to land shots. Hashimoto defending well though. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Li is figuring out what he wants to do next. Hashimoto keeping hold of Li's head, controlling as best he can.
That's one minute gone in the round. Li is just content to waste time from the top position. Hashimoto takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard. Li wants to control from the top but Hashimoto keeps moving. Li with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal. Li looking to sit in guard and control but Hashimoto gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top. Hashimoto advances position into side control! Li tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Hashimoto wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Hashimoto working the ground and pound. Li is trying to improve his position. Hashimoto scores with punches from side control. Hashimoto is looking to take a break and control but Li is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom. Li tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Hashimoto wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control. Hashimoto thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead. Li tries to buck Hashimoto off but Hashimoto is having none of it.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Li wants to control but Hashimoto postures up. Hashimoto passes to full mount! That's big trouble for Li! Hashimoto is in the full mount, landing strikes. Hashimoto lands a nice shot to the head. Hashimoto is landing with some decent strikes but Li is trying to advance his position so the referee is letting the fight continue. Li taking shots to the head.
Li is rocked! Hashimoto is in the full mount, landing strikes. Oh Li is still in real trouble! Will he be able to recover?!! Hashimoto lands a big shot to the head and Li winces in pain. He's tapped out due to strikes!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:56 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Strikes). Keiji Hashimoto! Keiji Hashimoto retains his featherweight title! After winning the bout, Keiji Hashimoto thanked all his fans and promised he'd do even better in his next fight. The crowd seemed to love his humility.
