PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a middleweight MMA rules bout between Edison Pope (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Dean Fergers (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Pope comes into the arena with Schoolboy Q - Man of the Year blaring out of the sound system. Fergers has chosen Linkin' Park - Waiting for the End as his entrance music. Edison Pope has the edge in experience - let's see if he can make that count tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the middleweight division.

And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 2 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Dean Fergers!
The judges for this bout are Chad Campbell, Dean Styles and Franklyn Lucas.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Fergers closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
Fergers trying to mount his opponent but Pope defends it.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Pope wants to get back to his feet.
Still in half guard, Fergers seems content to control.
Fergers is a painfully thin specimen of a man. You do wonder whether a good body kick would snap him clean in two.

Fergers looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Fergers wants to pass to mount but Pope is defending the position.
If this pace continues, the referee will definitely step in and force a standup.

The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet.

No joy there for Pope, who threw a few shots but didn't land.

Pope stuns Fergers with a nice body shot, before stepping back out of range.
Pope scores with a sloppy punch to the body. Not much technique there but it did the business.
Pope lands with an uppercut that bounces Fergers off the cage and back into range.

Edison Pope seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Pope tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Fergers was well out of range. Poor timing from Pope.
Fergers shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Pope pinned against the cage. Pope gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Pope seems to be moving with more speed, compared to his last bout. He must have been working on that in the gym.
Pope throws a shot from downtown. Fergers moves away and avoids it.
Pope lands with an uppercut that bounces Fergers off the cage and back into range.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.

Fergers dodges the punch combination from Pope.
Pope is breathing heavily.
Pope throws the left hand but Fergers avoids the punch easily.

Fergers moves out of range of the strikes.
Fergers will need to tighten up his combinations if he doesn't want to gas himself out, swinging at thin air.

Pope fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Fergers manages to avoid it.

Fergers gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Pope is looking to score with knees to the body. Maybe he'll change it up and go body then head. Fergers is defending well for now.
Pope wants to break free but Fergers has control.
Pope tries to break the clinch but Fergers is controlling the position.

Fergers wants the takedown. Pope is fighting it off but Fergers persists and manages to bring the fight to the ground, ending up in Pope's guard against the cage.

Fergers stands and throws Pope's legs to the side, diving into side control.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Pope seems a little lost for a moment, as Fergers dominates the positioning.

Pope slaps away a takedown attempt from Fergers, before circling back to the center of the mat.

Fergers is looking for a takedown here. He's shot in and has managed to get it, finishing up in Pope's half guard.
Fergers looks more muscular than last time we saw him. He must have been on the weights.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.

Fergers is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Pope sees it coming and defends easily.

Pope ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Fergers moves away.
Nice straight punches there by Pope. You know Roy Jones Jr respects the hands of Pope.

Fergers steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Pope.

The fight moves into the clinch position.
Pope is trying to break the clinch but Fergers has him pressed against the cage.
Pope wants to break free. God knows he wants to breaaaak freeee.
Come on Fergers - let's have some action - none of this stalling nonsense.

Pope's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.
Pope throws a right hand that Fergers ducks under and follows up with a left that Fergers also avoids with ease.

A head kick misses from Pope.
Fergers uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Pope.
Pope stuffs the takedown.
Fergers shoots in but Pope avoids the takedown attempt easily.
Edison Pope has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Dean Fergers.
Pope looks to score with a combo but nothing lands.

Pope gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.

Fergers has a closed guard, preventing anything of note from happening. Perhaps he's looking to stall.
We get told so often about how wrestlers don't like to be on their backs. Let's see if Fergers can do anything to dispel that myth.

Fergers is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
Pope has decided he wants to stand but the closed guard of Fergers is proving hard to escape from.

Fergers is looking for a triangle here but Pope uses the submission attempt to pass into side control.
Pope tries to stand but Fergers is controlling his head.

Pope wants to stand up but Fergers manages to regain full guard.

A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.

Fergers shoots in for a double leg but Pope sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
