PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Hamood Hallak (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jim Degrizz (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I can't wait for this one - let's get the fighter introductions out of the way and get this one started!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 12 - 15 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Hamood Hallak!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 9 - 5 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Jim Degrizz!
The judges for this bout are Don Winkell, Timothy Bukovac and Frank Antenori.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Hallak punishes Degrizz's body with a nice straight punch.
Degrizz throws a right hand that Hallak ducks under and follows up with a left that Hallak also avoids with ease.
Hallak looks to have improved his striking defense since last time we saw him fight.
Donk. Degrizz catches Hallak right on the button with a cross.
Degrizz lands a straight punch to the body, keeping Hallak at a distance.
Degrizz listening to his corner there, landing a nice uppercut.
We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that Degrizz has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat.
A punch lands to the side of Degrizz 's head but he takes it in his stride.
Hallak scores with a straight right hand, right through his opponent's guard.


It looks like Jim Degrizz has been cut.
Hallak throws a right and a left that Degrizz avoids nicely.
Hallak lands an overhand left. A wild punch that just about connected.
The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here.
A looping hook to the body misses from Hallak. Degrizz does a little dance to reset his feet.
Degrizz looks to throw the jab but Hallak is out of range.
Degrizz throws out a powerful jab.
Hallak lands a head kick. Degrizz smiles back at him and beckons him forward.
Degrizz works the jab nicely.
Hallak looks to land a combination but Degrizz avoids it well.
A big left from Hallak misses.
Degrizz takes a kick to the side of the head.
Hallak's hands are dropping dangerously low here and Degrizz connects clean with a right hook that sends him down to one knee! Hallak scrambles back to his feet.
Degrizz walks into a stiff left hand from Hallak.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Hallak takes a jab on the nose. He smiles like he loves it and keeps coming.
Degrizz lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Hallak circles away quickly and effectively.

Hallak misses with a double jab
and Degrizz counters with a shot to the ribs. That looked like it hurt.

and Degrizz counters with a flying knee. Nice.
Degrizz steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Hallak.
Hallak tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Degrizz defends well and Hallak ends up having to push Degrizz into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.

Hallak's corner calls for him to break the clinch, which he does.

and Hallak counters with a flying knee that drops Degrizz!
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!

Degrizz had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Hallak defends it easily.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
Hallak trying to control but Degrizz is working from the bottom.

Degrizz is looking for a triangle but Hallak pushes his legs off easily.
Hallak stopping the sweep attempt from Degrizz.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Hallak accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.
Degrizz keeping moving, preventing Hallak from controlling successfully.
Degrizz controls Hallak momentarily but Hallak frees himself.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Degrizz is looking to sweep but instead, Hallak has passed into half guard.

Hallak looks to land a strike but Degrizz avoids it nicely and regains full guard.

The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Degrizz looking for submissions from the bottom here. Moving his hips around, possibly looking for an armbar.
Hallak looking to pass the guard.
Hallak postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.
Hallak's corner is telling him to maintain position.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Degrizz utilising some decent striking defenses from the guard, preventing the ground and pound.
Degrizz is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.

Hallak got a little sloppy there for a moment and Degrizz has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Hallak has managed to get both his arms back between Degrizz's legs - danger averted.
Hallak throwing elbows and punches but not connecting, as Degrizz works some decent striking defense from the bottom.
Hallak postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

Degrizz is working actively from the bottom, looking for submissions. He's escaped his hips to the side and he's going for an armbar! Hallak has his hands clasped together but Degrizz extends and breaks Hallak's desperate grasp, forcing a tap out due to armbar! Nice BJJ displayed there by Degrizz.

Ladies and gentlemen, after 4:52 of round 1, we have a winner by way of Submission (Armbar). Jim Degrizz!
After winning the bout, Jim Degrizz thanked all his fans and promised he'd do even better in his next fight. The crowd seemed to love his humility.
