Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
11 - 5 - 0, fighting out of New York, Kip Aragus! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
23 - 8 - 0, fighting out of New York, Marcelio Garcia! The judges for this bout are Lou da Vinci, Bruno Lombardi and Anthony Taglia.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Garcia closes the distance and takes a jab right on the nose as he does so. We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that Garcia has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat. Aragus fakes high and swings low for a body shot but Garcia manages to avoid it. Well, he's not going to score with shots like that. A lazy body kick attempt from Aragus. Garcia blocks a jab. Aragus gets a double leg takedown into Garcia's guard. Garcia preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage. Aragus wants to control from the top but Garcia keeps moving. Aragus looking to pass the guard. Garcia preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Aragus stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Garcia swivels though and keeps the full guard. Aragus trying to control but Garcia is working from the bottom. The referee claps his hands together and tells the fighters to work.
That's one minute gone in the round. Garcia escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Aragus gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance. Aragus throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent. Aragus stopping the sweep attempt from Garcia. Aragus scores with a decent looking elbow strike. Aragus throws a strike but Garcia rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top. Garcia passes easily into side control. Nice work. Aragus on the wrong end of some ground and pound. Garcia working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it. Aragus tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Garcia wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Garcia wants to lay and pray for a moment but Aragus keeps working. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Garcia is looking for a kimura. He might have it! No, Aragus has escaped the position, nice work there. Garcia tries to advance to mount but can't. Aragus gets one leg under and gets the fight to half guard. Aragus is trying to get back to full guard. Garcia prevents Aragus from standing back up.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Aragus is refusing to be controlled, as Garcia sits in half guard. Aragus won't allow Garcia to pass to mount. Garcia lands with a punch from half guard. Aragus slips a foot under and gets full guard. Nice work. Garcia wants to control from the top but Aragus keeps moving. Garcia passes Aragus's right leg, so he's now in half guard. Aragus is trying to stand back up but Garcia is controlling him
Aragus is trying to maintain the position but Garcia is very close to passing his half guard. Aragus is looking to sinch up a guillotine here but Garcia pulls his head out easily. Garcia works his foot free and advances to mount.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Aragus is wriggling around trying to escape.
Garcia jumps to side control looking for an arm triangle but Aragus manages to avoid the submission attempt. Garcia throwing shots but missing, from side control. Aragus sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard. Garcia is working for a submission of some sort.
Aragus tries to get to full guard but Garcia has control of the leg. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Aragus throws a body shot but no joy. Garcia moves his head to the side to avoid a jab but walks straight into a cross. Garcia is trying hard to land a takedown here. Aragus sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet. Nice uppercut there from Aragus. Aragus rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Garcia moves out of range and avoids them all easily. A cross from Aragus lands. Some wild striking there from Aragus.
Aragus tries a switch kick but it misses it's target. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Garcia fails with a takedown attempt. Aragus looks to land a body kick but Garcia moved away. Aragus scores with a sloppy right hand. Garcia should have avoided that one.
That's one minute gone in the round. Garcia closes the distance and gets a trip takedown into side control. Aragus quickly recovers to half guard. Aragus is looking to regain full guard. Nice strikes from Garcia there. Aragus trying to hold on to Garcia's head to control him but Garcia postures up.

That's two minutes gone in the round. Aragus looking to hit a scissor sweep but Garcia is one step ahead there. Garcia works a leg free and moves into half guard. Marcelio Garcia has got the better of the ground game so far. Aragus looks like he's trying to stand up.
Garcia stalling away here and it's allowed Aragus to slip out his trapped foot and regain full guard. Garcia got a little sloppy there for a moment and Aragus has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Garcia has managed to get both his arms back between Aragus's legs - danger averted. Garcia stopping the sweep attempt from Aragus. Garcia is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long. Aragus escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Garcia gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance. Aragus is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Aragus keeping moving, preventing Garcia from controlling successfully. Aragus has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Garcia can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself. Garcia looking to pass the guard. Aragus controls Garcia momentarily but Garcia frees himself. Aragus looking for a sweep. Not yet Aragus, not yet. Garcia is pushing down on Aragus's leg trying to pass to half guard. Aragus is fighting to maintain full guard but Garcia has managed to sneak the leg through. Garcia is trying to control. Aragus wants to improve his position but can't escape this time.
That's four minutes gone in the round. There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action. Garcia lands with an elbow from half guard - that looked like it hurt. Aragus tries to roll over but Garcia keeps him under control. Garcia is looking to advance position but Aragus won't allow it. Garcia is looking for a kimura. It's going to be difficult to finish that from half guard though and Aragus defends it well. Aragus manages to get to full guard.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Garcia content to stall in guard here. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Kip Aragus dominated that second round. The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!
Garcia goes for a double leg but Aragus avoids the attempt and the two fighters end up clinched against the cage as Aragus continues to drive forward. Aragus lands an elbow just above Garcia 's eye. I was talking to Aragus's coach per-fight and he was telling me that they'd been working on the clinch in the runup to this fight. Aragus slows down the pace here.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. A looping hook to the body misses from Aragus. Garcia does a little dance to reset his feet. Garcia shoots in looking for a takedown. Aragus tries to sprawl out of it but Garcia keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Aragus manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing. Kip Aragus has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Marcelio Garcia. Aragus lands with a good body shot.
That's one minute gone in the round. Garcia misses with a takedown attempt and Aragus counters with a two punch combo. Aragus clobbers Garcia with an overhand right that has the crowd gasping. That made a horrendous noise. Aragus lands a right hook to the body.
Aragus tries to score with a low kick but Garcia moves his leg out of the way. Aragus fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Aragus throws a leg kick but Garcia sees it coming and moves out of range. Aragus loads up on a big right hand but Garcia slips the punch. Aragus misses with a jab and misses with a cross straight after too.
Garcia on the wrong end of a nice low kick. He's acting like it's no big deal but he doesn't want to take many more of those. Aragus tries to close the distance and clinch up but Garcia swats him away and circles back towards the center. Garcia checks a leg kick nicely. Kip Aragus is fighting for a decision here - he's started to take the cautious approach.
That's two minutes gone in the round. A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Garcia. Aragus slaps away a takedown attempt from Garcia, before circling back to the center of the mat. A good leg kick by Aragus. Wooooo! Give it up for these two warriors! They are putting on a show! Aragus throws the overhand right but ducks down into a quick takedown attempt. Garcia was covering up waiting for the punch and Aragus finishes the takedown easily into guard. Aragus is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Garcia can do to turn this around? Garcia tries to land a sweep but no joy. Aragus is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions. Garcia isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Aragus stacks Garcia on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Aragus!
That's three minutes gone in the round. Aragus remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while. Marcelio Garcia has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here! Garcia gets back to half guard. Garcia is looking to improve his position.

That's four minutes gone in the round. Neither fighter has done anything of merit for a good minute or two here and the crowd are not happy about it. Garcia is pressing down on Aragus's left leg trying to get back to full guard. He's managed it. Aragus avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Aragus is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Garcia has a butterfly guard looking to sweep but Aragus has passed into side control.
