PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a light heavyweight MMA rules bout between Chuck Liddell (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Nick James (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Liddell kept the crowd waiting but all that was forgotten when his ring entrance music started. The incomparable musical genius that is It's Dark and Hell Is Hot. The key to victory for Chuck Liddell has got to be keeping the fight on the feet.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the light heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 28 - 39 - 0, fighting out of Hilo, Chuck Liddell!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 17 - 20 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Nick James!
The judges for this bout are Paulsen Ambrosius, Patrick Alders and Wagner Zegers.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Liddell stuffs the takedown.
We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that James has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat.
James moves out of range of the leg kick from Liddell.
James throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Liddell dances in quickly and lands a nice inside leg kick on James. That did some damage!
Liddell tries to clinch there but James circles away.

Liddell knocks James to the floor with a head kick! Can he finish him!?


James is rocked!


It looks like Nick James has been cut.
This has been an exciting period of action!
James is trying to get back to half guard.
James is trying to control Liddell's posture but Liddell avoids it.
James is trying to improve his position.
Liddell wants to control but James is keeping him busy.

James is looking for a sweep.
James struggling a bit here.
James is not content to let Liddell control the position.

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
James manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.

Liddell looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.

James works his way to full guard. Good work.

The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily.

James has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Liddell can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself.
Liddell won't allow James to sweep him here.
James has a butterfly guard looking to sweep but Liddell has passed into side control.
James is trying to get back to half guard.
Liddell wants to lay and pray for a moment but James keeps working.
James is looking for a sweep.

Liddell is pausing for a moment. What's he doing? It looks like he's clearing his nose. Oh dude! He's shot a load of snot all down James's shoulder. That is not cool.
James is not content to let Liddell control the position.
James manages to get back to half guard.

Liddell is trying to work for a kimura. This could be trouble! No, James has managed to free his arm - good work.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
James is trying to maintain the position but Liddell is very close to passing his half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

James bobs and weaves into range and then changes levels and scores with a nice takedown into side control.
Liddell is trying to get back to half guard.
James trying to control the position but Liddell is working away.

James thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.
Liddell can't do much from the bottom here.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

James working hard here to secure a kimura but he's not really in the right position for it.

James wants to control but Liddell is keeping him busy.

James tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no James has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!
Liddell is trying to control James's posture but James avoids it.
Nick James has got the better of the ground game so far.
The fighters are trapped in the ropes so we're going to have a reposition here. The ref calls for a break and repositions the fighters in the center of the ring.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.

James swings around for an armbar but Liddell sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into James's guard.
There's a bit of a scramble here and now James is on top in guard.

Liddell has control of James's left arm, preventing James from doing any damage.
James wants to control from the top but Liddell keeps moving.

Liddell throws his legs up looking for a submission but James uses it to pass to side control.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Liddell is looking for a sweep.

James thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

James wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Liddell, who protects the arm well.
Liddell is looking for a sweep.

James swings around for an armbar but Liddell sees it coming a mile off and turns beautifully into James's guard.

Liddell postures up.

James working for a triangle but Liddell defends it easily.

James escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Liddell gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

James working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Liddell doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Liddell manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem.

James isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Liddell stacks James on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Liddell!
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Nick James showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the ring so we can get back down to business. And we move into the final round!

and Liddell counters with a series of strikes. James will be more careful next time no doubt.
Chuck Liddell is winning the standup battle so far.
Liddell shoots for a double leg takedown but James sprawls well. He's pushed Liddell's face into the mat and manages to get back to his feet relatively easily.

That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Chuck Liddell. That's going to take a lot out of him.
James tries to pass to full mount but Liddell defends it.

James wants to work for an arm triangle but Liddell is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

James is looking for a kimura but he's never going to get it from there.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Liddell is defending against the submission attempts here by James.

Liddell is trying to get back to full guard.
James is just content to waste time from the top position. Liddell takes advantage of the situation and regains full guard.
Liddell manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. James manages to get himself to full guard.

Liddell seems content to control from guard here. He's going to have to remain active though if he doesn't want to get stood back up.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Liddell sneaks a leg through and gets to half guard. That was like a knife through butter how easily he passed James's guard.
James is staying active underneath Liddell, who seems content to just control the action from this position.

Liddell is thwarting James's attempts to control the position.
Liddell working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.

I would just about give that final round to Nick James.
I think James has won this one but let's see whether the judges agree with me. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
