Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Akira Katana!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, David Johnson!
The judges for this bout are Tatsuya Matsuyama, Hirohito Nitta and Taro Takaoka.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Katana throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.
Johnson tries to clinch but Katana moves out of range.
Katana throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Johnson's waist but Johnson gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Katana off to one side.
Katana throws a combination but it was largely blocked by Johnson.

Katana uses the cage to get back to his feet.
Johnson doesn't succeed with the takedown

and Katana counters with a takedown into full mount! That could mean trouble for Johnson!

Johnson is staying active underneath Katana, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Katana wants to stand up but Johnson has a hold of him and won't allow it.
Katana not landing any meaningful shots this time.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Johnson is looking to sinch up a gullotine here but Katana pulls his head out easily.
Katana tries to stand but his hand is stuck under Johnson.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.

Johnson looking to force a kimura from the bottom here. He's concentrating on that move too much though and Katana pushes past his half guard into mount!

Johnson bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
Katana is looking for a sweep. Johnson is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

Katana is looking to regain full guard. Not this time though.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are showing their displeasure at the lack of action as loud boos ring out around the arena.
Katana tries to kick Johnson off but Johnson keeps his base steady and stays in half guard.
Johnson passes to full mount!
Johnson wants to take his opponent's back but Katana doesn't allow it.

Johnson jumps to side control looking for an arm triangle but Katana manages to avoid the submission attempt.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but David Johnson will probably get the nod.
The corners get their ten second warning. Both fighters stand from their stools and stare eachother down, ready to get back to the action.

We could do with one of the fighters taking the initiative a bit more on the ground - they're both waiting to capitalize on a mistake.

Johnson is breathing heavily.

The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Katana cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!
Katana cracks Johnson with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.
Johnson is wriggling around trying to escape.
Katana connects with a couple of good shots from mount.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
Johnson is trying desperately to improve position.
Katana knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Johnson on the ground.
Katana can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Johnson is looking to escape.
Katana lands a big elbow.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Johnson tries to get back to half guard but can't.
Katana avoids the attempt from Johnson to control.
Akira Katana overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Katana wants to control the pace but Johnson is squirming around nicely.

Johnson slips a leg in and gets back to half guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Akira Katana dominated that second round.
The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!



Katana feints and then dives in with a takedown. That was a long way out but the feint bought him enough time to close the distance and complete the takedown. Now we'll play guard for a bit and see who can get the better of that position.

Johnson is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle.

Johnson takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

Johnson keeping moving, preventing Katana from controlling successfully.
Katana wants to get up but he can't break Johnson's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
Johnson lands a beautiful switch and he's in full mount! That could spell trouble for Katana!

The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action.
Katana is looking to get back to his feet - it's going to be hard from this position.
Katana is squirming around, avoiding Johnson's attempts to control the action.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

Johnson has hold of Katana's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Katana manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.

Katana is working hard here to advance position.

Katana tries to control the position but Johnson now has his back.

Johnson is working the back position looking for the choke. Oh, he's slid into an armbar! Beautiful transition and Katana taps out! Fantastic Jiu Jitsu from Johnson.
