PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Steve Freeman (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Martjn Van Der Meer (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Martjn Van Der Meer was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the welterweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Steve Freeman!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of London, Martjn Van Der Meer!
The judges for this bout are Richard Clark, James Ackerman and Donald Grub.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Van Der Meer avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Freeman tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.
Van Der Meer closes the distance and takes a jab right on the nose as he does so.
Freeman shoots and misses

and Van Der Meer counters with a takedown into side control.
Van Der Meer controlling the position.
Freeman wings away with a couple of strikes but they don't land.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Van Der Meer's corner are shouting for him to control the position and he seems happy to oblige.

Well. There's a bit of a lull in the action here and the crowd are starting to get restless.
Van Der Meer is trying to advance to mount but he's lost his balance and Freeman reverses the position - he's now on top in Van Der Meer's guard.
Van Der Meer has his hands on Freeman's head, controlling the position.
Van Der Meer looking to hit a scissor sweep but Freeman is one step ahead there.

Van Der Meer is controlling Freeman's posture.

Van Der Meer pulls Freeman in close to prevent any damage.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Freeman accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
A few boos can be heard. I'm sure they will multiply if the fighters don't pick up the pace.
Freeman shoots in for a takedown but Van Der Meer shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
Freeman rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Van Der Meer moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Van Der Meer stuffs the takedown attempt from Freeman. Freeman gets slowly back to his feet.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Steve Freeman. That's going to take a lot out of him.
A combination from Van Der Meer does no damage.
Van Der Meer misses with a looping left.
Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!
Freeman is looking to clinch but Van Der Meer is avoiding it.

and Van Der Meer counters with a nice double leg into side control. Freeman won't be happy with that.

Martjn Van Der Meer dominated that round.
That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.


Freeman changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Van Der Meer tries to avoid it but Freeman manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Van Der Meer to the ground. Van Der Meer escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.

Freeman really does look like a pencil wearing a pair of gloves. Let's hope he has a gameplan to suit that ridiculous body shape.

Freeman wants to get back to his feet but Van Der Meer is in a dominant position and won't allow it.
Martjn Van Der Meer has got the better of the ground game so far.
Van Der Meer is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Martjn Van Der Meer showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business. And we move into the final round!

Freeman has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Van Der Meer is working away from the top position though.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Both fighters are breathing heavily.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.
Van Der Meer ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Freeman moves away.

Van Der Meer is just sitting in guard, looking to avoid any submissions.

Van Der Meer wants to pass the guard but Freeman is keeping the position.
Van Der Meer is intent on slowing down the pace of the fight, simply looking to control.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Van Der Meer throws a strike but Freeman rolls with it and manages to sweep. Now he's in guard on top.

Martjn Van Der Meer comfortably won the final round on my scorecard.
Well Van Der Meer has outworked and out performed his opponent in all aspects of the game today. He was simply too good and the decision should be no more than a formality. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
