Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
11 - 7 - 0, fighting out of Sydney, Bernardo Bernardo! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
5 - 3 - 1, fighting out of Los Angeles, William Henry Bonney! The judges for this bout are Ron Honeybunn, Winston Howard and Skip Squint.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Bonney misses the jab. Bernardo misses with a right hand and Bernardo takes a counter punch right on the button for his troubles. Bernardo uses some good footwork to avoid the body shot by Bonney.
Nice takedown defense from Bonney. No joy for Bernardo on that attempt. Bonney thinks about the counter body kick. Bernardo looks to score with a jab to the body but Bonney is just out of range. Bernardo bobs and weaves well there to avoid the strikes. Bernardo tries to counter by moving into the clinch but Bonney manages to circle out of the way. Bernardo slips a jab from Bonney. Bernardo throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Bonney's waist but Bonney gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Bernardo off to one side. We've been hearing reports that Bernardo has been drilling takedowns in recent sessions so let's see if that has an impact on the result of this fight. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Bernardo throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Bonney's waist but Bonney gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Bernardo off to one side. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Bernardo Bernardo. That's going to take a lot out of him. Bonney ducks under an overhand right and circles away with a smile on his face. Bonney lands a really nice looking cross but Bernardo seems unphased.
Bernardo shoots and misses and Bonney counters with a nice jab to the body that keeps Bernardo thinking.
That's one minute gone in the round. Bonney keeps his opponent at a distance with a nice jab.
Bernardo dives in and grabs Bonney's left leg, looking for a takedown. Bonney pushes down on Bernardo's head and hops out. Bonney breaks the clinch and we're back to striking at distance.
Bonney throws a head kick that looked like it stung.
Bernardo is rocked! Both fighters step back and shake their arms out. Bonney engages and cracks Bernardo with a massive lead left hook - Bernardo tumbles to the floor, out cold! What a shot! Bonney is delighted - all that hard work in training paid off!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 1:28 of round 1, we have a winner by way of KO (Punch). William Henry Bonney!
