PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Diego Godin (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Akiro Sata (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). The crowd seem to be enjoying Sata's choice of entrance music: Onward to Victory!. Well, the cameraman is lingering on a pretty young lady for a bit too long there. Keep your eyes on the prize buddy or you'll miss the fighter intros!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 17 - 6 - 0, fighting out of Amsterdam, Diego Godin!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 12 - 14 - 0, fighting out of New York, Akiro Sata!
The judges for this bout are Albert Achterberg, Saam Ante and Nard Betker.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Godin doesn't succeed with the takedown
and Sata cracks him with a counter punch right on the button.
Sata connects with a body shot.
Donk. Sata catches Godin right on the button with a cross.

Sata closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Godin's guard.
Sata throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent.
Sata engaging in some classic timewasting tactics.
Sata postures up.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Sata trying to control but Godin is working from the bottom.
Sata passes easily into side control. Nice work.
Sata wants to lay and pray for a moment but Godin keeps working.

In the pre-fight buildup videos we saw Sata working his ground and pound in the gym. He isn't landing a great percentage of his ground strikes so far though.
Godin struggling a bit here.
Sata landing with strikes to the head and body from side control.
Sata in side control, trying to ground and pound but not landing this time.
Godin tries to work a leg under to get back to half guard but Sata wriggles his own leg back out and remains in side control.
Sata laying and praying for a moment but Godin takes advantage and regains half guard.

Sata working some ground and pound from close in. He's looking to maintain this position and strike for a while by the looks of things... although he'll probably advance to full mount in a minute now I've said that.

Sata looking for a kimura but he'll have to free his other leg if he wants to finish that. Perhaps he's just using it as a distraction technique.
Sata looks to score some points with some ground and pound.
Godin trying to control but Sata postures up.
Sata looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.

Godin tries to get to full guard but Sata has control of the leg.
Godin is staying active underneath Sata, who seems content to just control the action from this position.
Sata is controlling the pace.

The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.
Godin is looking for a sweep. Sata is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Sata seems to be looking for submissions.
Sata moves nicely into side control.

Akiro Sata dominated that round.
The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.



Sata manages to get an easy takedown there - catching Godin on his heels. He'll look to pass Godin's guard now, I'm sure.
Sata tries to free his leg and advance position but Godin is retaining full guard.

Sata won't allow Godin to sweep him here.
Godin controls Sata momentarily but Sata frees himself.
Sata looking to sit in guard and control but Godin gets the butterfly guard and sweeps. He's now in the guard on the top.

The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Sata is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Godin is aware though and is defending well.
Sata lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard.

Sata slips nicely into half guard.
Akiro Sata has got the better of the ground game so far.

Sata seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Godin does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back.
Sata might have to switch it up a bit here because his efforts to control Godin haven't been going to plan, at least at the current moment in time.

Sata passes the half guard and he's now in mount! Big trouble for Godin!

Sata misses with a series of strikes from mount. He'll no doubt be working on his ground and pound when he gets back to the gym.

Sata controlling the position easily from mount.

Godin sneaks a leg under to get to half guard.
Sata passes to full mount!
Sata has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Godin is squirming around, avoiding Sata's attempts to control the action.
Sata throws an elbow from mount that misses. Lucky escape for Godin because Sata loaded up on that one.
The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Sata cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!
Sata can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Godin is looking to escape.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Sata sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment.

Sata cracks Godin with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.
Sata trying to control but Godin is having none of it.
Sata pausing momentarily but resumes with a couple of decent strikes that do a bit of damage.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Sata connects with a couple of good shots from mount.
Sata landing strikes from the mount.
Sata thuds his fist into the canvas! Oooouch!

Godin is desperately trying to improve his position but Sata has a good base and remains in mount.
Sata lands with some strikes.
Sata putting on the heat here with some good ground and pound!
We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out!
Godin tries to lock up and control but Sata gives him a forearm to the face and pushes him away.
Godin is squirming around, avoiding Sata's attempts to control the action.
Godin really trying hard to get back to half guard here.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Sata takes a little breather and maintains the position. The referee will be looking for him to stay active from such a dominant position though.
Godin can't escape the position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Akiro Sata showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.
That's time! Godin's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight. And we move into the final round!


Godin doesn't manage to clinch there - Sata circles away.
Sata lands a straight punch to the body, keeping Godin at a distance.
Sata dips down and scores with a jab to the body.

Excellent takedown into side control there by Sata.
Sata landing a few strikes.
Sata wants to control but Godin is keeping him busy.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Sata looking for an arm triangle but it's way too loose to do anything.

Sata tries to advance to mount but Godin denies him.

Godin sneaks back into half guard.
Sata prevents Godin from improving his position.
Sata lands strikes from half guard.

Godin trying to hold on to Sata's head to control him but Sata postures up.
Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Sata is taking a breather. Godin says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something.

Sata is controlling the pace.
Godin wants to control the action here but instead Sata manages to pass to full mount!

Sata lands a couple of good shots and Godin has given up his back, trying to escape the position!


Godin is rocked!
Sata lands shots to the head and Godin turtles up! The ref has seen enough and stops the fight! This one is over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:27 of round 3, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Akiro Sata!
During a confident post fight interview, Akiro Sata thanked all his fans. He seemed very genuine when describing how motivated his fans keep him.
