Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
1 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Hans Mentagawa! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 3 - 0, fighting out of Rio de Janeiro, Joe Lewis! The judges for this bout are Emerson Jorge, Daniel Cesar and Felipe Paraventi.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Mentagawa fails to land the takedown. Mentagawa has closed the distance and engaged Lewis in a clinch.
Mentagawa is working on a single leg takedown against the cage. Lewis can't fight it off and eventually Mentagawa manages to take the fight to the floor. Lewis looks annoyed but at least he's managed to land in guard. Lewis looking to hit a scissor sweep but Mentagawa is one step ahead there. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Mentagawa wants to control from the top but Lewis keeps moving. Lewis really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Mentagawa. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out. Lewis keeping full guard, as Mentagawa tries to pass.
That's one minute gone in the round. Mentagawa is working hard here to advance position. Mentagawa wants to control from the top but Lewis keeps moving. Mentagawa drops back, looking for a kneebar! Lewis looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Lewis looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Lewis! Mentagawa managing to avoid any damage from the strikes thrown by Lewis.
Mentagawa tries to strike but it doesn't land. Mentagawa manages to get one leg in to regain half guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Lewis trying to control from Mentagawa's half guard. Mentagawa has other ideas though and has regained full guard. Lewis trying to control the position from guard on top but Mentagawa is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Mentagawa working from the bottom, still in full guard. He's managed to get a loose triangle. Lewis doesn't seem to be doing much to defend here, obviously he feels comfortable in the position. Lewis manages to throw the legs off his shoulder and he's back into guard - no problem. Mentagawa working for a triangle but Lewis defends it easily.
The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult. Lewis won't allow Mentagawa to sweep him here.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Lewis postures up.
Mentagawa lands an upkick as Lewis stands over him. Mentagawa is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Lewis is aware though and is defending well. Lewis wants to control from the top but Mentagawa keeps moving. Mentagawa not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

That's four minutes gone in the round. Mentagawa is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive. Lewis stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Mentagawa swivels though and keeps the full guard. Mentagawa manages to sweep nicely, so he's now on top. Lewis manages to get himself to full guard.
Mentagawa slips nicely into half guard. The crowd thankful this round is nearly over. Mentagawa seems very keen to just sit and control from half guard but Lewis does not like that idea so much and is remaining active off his back. Lewis trying to control but Mentagawa postures up.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Hans Mentagawa dominated that round. That's time! Mentagawa's corner gives him a slap on the ass as he gets ready to fight.
Mentagawa tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Lewis defends well and Mentagawa ends up having to push Lewis into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch. Mentagawa missing with knees to the body.
Lewis drops down looking for an ankle pick but Mentagawa pulls his leg out and moves away.
Lewis tries to keep at a distance but Mentagawa has taken the fight into the clinch. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Mentagawa breaks from the clinch.

That's one minute gone in the round. Lewis tries to bum rush Mentagawa with a series of wild strikes but Mentagawa uses good footwork to avoid the assault. Mentagawa shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Lewis pinned against the cage. Lewis gets the underhooks and manages to circle away. Mentagawa darts in looking for a takedown but Lewis gets double underhooks and turns Mentagawa into the cage. That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Hans Mentagawa. That's going to take a lot out of him. Mentagawa tries to score a body lock takedown but Lewis shows good agility there to stay on his feet. Mentagawa misses with an elbow strike.

That's two minutes gone in the round. Mentagawa gets to his feet. Lewis looking to butt scoot but the ref puts an end to that. On your feet son! Lewis looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Mentagawa is fending him off so far but Lewis persists. Nope, Mentagawa circles away and we're back to standing. Lewis tries to grapple but his opponent circles and Mentagawa connects with a straight left hand counter down the middle. Mentagawa looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Lewis! Lewis is trying to control Mentagawa's posture but Mentagawa avoids it.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Lewis prevents Mentagawa from improving position. Lewis is trying to escape and get back to his feet. Mentagawa has hold of Lewis's arm here. He's working for an Americana. It looks like he might have it! Lewis tries to escape but he's just digging himself in deeper - Mentagawa cranks the arm and Lewis screams in pain! The ref makes a decision and ends the fight before the tap - no complains from Lewis, who is just happy to have his arm attached to his body.
Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:48 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Americana). Hans Mentagawa!
