Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the middleweight championship of the world! Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
30 - 18 - 1, fighting out of New York, Ivan Milat! And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
33 - 9 - 0, fighting out of New York, Luke Johnson! The judges for this bout are Timothy Bukovac, Frank Antenori and .
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Milat takes a kick to the body and keeps moving. We can't be sure of the tactics at this early stage but we have heard that Johnson has been working on his takedowns a lot in the buildup to the fight and we can only assume he's going to look to take this to the mat. Johnson slips a jab from Milat. Johnson walks forward and throws out a flicking leg kick. Milat checks it nicely though, as he moves to the side. Milat throws a hook but Johnson blocks it. Johnson scores with a straight right hand, right through his opponent's guard. Milat loads up on a big right hand but Johnson slips the punch. Johnson scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice. Johnson is putting a hurting on Milat here, landing some big shots from side control. Milat stops Johnson from passing to mount. You can see the frustration on Milat's face, being in this tough position on the bottom. Johnson trying to control the action but Milat is working from the bottom. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Johnson creates some space and throws a big elbow, but Milat sees it coming and moves his head just enough to avoid the strike.
That's one minute gone in the round. Milat striking from the bottom but nothing landed.
Milat is looking for a sweep. Milat gives up the full mount - oops, sloppy defensive grappling there! Milat is trying to escape the mount.
Milat is flailing around like a fish out of water, trying to land strikes. Johnson trying to control but Milat is having none of it. Johnson lands with some strikes. Johnson lands a couple of good shots and Milat has given up his back, trying to escape the position! Johnson has his hand under the chin of his opponent looking for the choke. He's nearly got it! This one could be all over! But no, Milat has freed his hand and lives to survive another… well, another couple of seconds at least!
That's two minutes gone in the round. Milat prevents Johnson from getting a body triangle. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Johnson lands with a couple of good shots - one to the side of the head and one questionable shot that could be viewed as to the back of the head but the referee lets it go.
Milat is trying to stand back up. You can see the frustration on Milat's face… He knows he is in trouble unless he improves his position sooner rather than later.
Johnson is punishing Milat with some ground and pound. The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily. Milat is trying to break free.
Well, with Johnson on his back, surely it's only a matter of time before Milat is tapping out... Can he escape the position? This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! Johnson gets his hands free as Milat looks to control. Johnson has both hooks in and is working for a choke. Milat is in real trouble here. Johnson gets an arm under the chin and tightens the submission attempt... is this the end? Yes, Milat is tapping out! Johnson wins by rear naked choke!
