Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, in the light heavyweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
21 - 9 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Peter Worrell! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
7 - 5 - 1, fighting out of Los Angeles, Chuck Smith! The judges for this bout are Frank Antenori, and Timothy Bukovac.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Worrell lands with a head kick! That's gotta hurt. Smith has taken the fight to the clinch.
Smith is looking for a takedown. Worrell is looking to break free of the clinch but Smith has double underhooks. Worrell prevents a takedown attempt there.
A frustrated look appears on Smith's face as he tries to break the clinch. Smith looking for a takedown. Peter Worrell has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Chuck Smith. Worrell swings away with an uppercut that misses.
Smith jumps guard but his hands slip and he falls flat on his back. Well, he's made himself look a right mug there, as Worrell walks away with a smile on his face. Smith gets slowly back to his feet and shakes his head. Worrell misses with a series of wild punches.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Nice body kick there by Worrell. A head kick misses from Worrell. We've been told by Worrell's head coaches at Bi-polar Asylum that he's been working on his takedown defense in preparation for this fight. Smith lands a pitter patter jab to the forehead of his opponent. Smith fails with a takedown attempt. Worrell misses with a wild combination.
That's one minute gone in the round. Worrell tries to land with a swinging hook to the body but Smith was well out of range. Poor timing from Worrell. Worrell throws a jab but it's blocked by Smith. Worrell takes a swing at Smith's ribcage but misses. Worrell scores to the head and body with a nice combination! Worrell looks for the body kick but Smith saw that one coming. Worrell moves forwards but Smith connects with a nice, crisp jab. Smith scores a trip takedown into side control. Nice. Smith misses with the ground and pound. Worrell struggling a bit here. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Worrell is not content to let Smith control the position. Worrell struggling a bit here.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Smith taking a break here but Worrell is having none of it and regains half guard. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Smith is taking a breather. Worrell says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something. Worrell keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound. Worrell wants to get back to full guard but Smith has mounted him!
That's three minutes gone in the round. Smith is looking to secure an arm. He's managed it! He's pivoting for an armbar - that looks tight! But Worrell has managed to get out of it and now he's in a dominant position. Nice work from Worrell! Smith looking to sweep here. No luck so far. Smith had isolated an arm as going for a kimura. Worrell defends it easily. Worrell stays in close to Smith's body and controls the position. The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Smith not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Smith looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Worrell controls from within his opponent's guard. Worrell won't allow Smith to sweep him here. The fighters are working up against the cage. Smith manages to wriggle his way back to his feet, so the fighters are now clinched against the cage. Smith is working for a takedown up against the cage. He can't get it on this occasion though. Smith tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Worrell smiles and moves away.
Smith will have to do better than that with his takedown attempts. Worrell plants his feet and lands a nice head kick! Smith changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Worrell tries to avoid it but Smith manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Worrell to the ground. Worrell escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet. Worrell lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Smith circles away quickly and effectively. Smith tries to clinch but Worrell moves out of range. Worrell misses with a head kick.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Peter Worrell dominated that round. OK. That's time! The bell goes and we're back to the action.
Worrell throws a hook but Smith blocks it. Worrell misses with a kick to the body.
Worrell is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Smith can do to turn this around? Smith shoots in looking for a takedown but Worrell manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Smith's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away. Smith fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Worrell sprawls well initially but Smith persists and gets the takedown into half guard. Smith wants to pass to mount but Worrell is defending the position. Smith stops Worrell from getting back to his feet.
Worrell kicks Smith off and gets back to his feet. Smith shoots in looking for a takedown but Worrell manages to keep the fight standing, pushing Smith's face into the canvas for good measure before circling away. Smith fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt. Peter Worrell has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Chuck Smith. Worrell throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Smith shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it. Chuck Smith is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things. Smith ducks under a wild hook from Worrell. Smith on the wrong end of a nice jab.
That's one minute gone in the round. Worrell feints with a shoulder and throws a nice leg kick to Smith's calf. Smith tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Worrell paws at him with a jab and circles away. Peter Worrell is winning the standup battle so far. Worrell lands a lovely overhand right. Nice uppercut there from Worrell. A left lands for Worrell. Worrell lands with a thumping leg kick.
Worrell misses with an uppercut. Smith saw that one coming. Nice takedown defense from Worrell. No joy for Smith on that attempt. Worrell throws a sloppy body shot
letting Smith counter with a right hand. Worrell tries a head kick but it misses.
Smith changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Worrell tries to avoid it but Smith manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Worrell to the ground. Worrell escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet. A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Smith. Smith has tried to improve his agility in the runup to this fight. Worrell lands a big head kick that sends Smith tumbling to the mat! Worrell takes a step backwards and waves Smith back to his feet - he wants the finish!
Smith is rocked!
It looks like Chuck Smith has been cut. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Worrell cracks Smith with a big right hand that sees him stumbling back against the cage! Smith falls to his knees and Worrell doesn't need a second invitatation - he rushes in and fires off several unanswered shots that force the referee to stop the fight! This one is all over!
Ladies and gentlemen, after 2:55 of round 2, we have a winner by way of TKO (Strikes). Peter Worrell! In his post fight interview, Peter Worrell started talking himself up. Luckily his charisma kept the crowd on side and gave him a good reception.
