PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a heavyweight MMA rules bout between Earl OBrien (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Riley Cote (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Earl OBrien has the edge in experience - let's see if he can make that count tonight.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the heavyweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Earl OBrien!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of New York, Riley Cote!
The judges for this bout are Lou da Vinci, John Roberts and Jonathan Paton.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Cote lands a two punch combo.
OBrien shoots in for a takedown. "I don't think so" says Cote as he avoids it easily.
OBrien tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.

Cote fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with OBrien, pushing him back against the cage.
Cote has OBrien pressed against the cage.
Cote letting OBrien take a breather here.
Cote can't break the clinch.
Cote lands a shot to the body.
OBrien is trying to drag Cote to the mat but Cote just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.
OBrien is breathing heavily.
Cote has had enough of the clinch but OBrien keeps him there for the moment.
OBrien gets underhooks to prevent Cote's takedown attempt.
OBrien throws a vicious knee straight up the middle but Cote blocks it with crossed arms.
OBrien throws a punch but it's blocked by Cote.

Cote gets double underhooks and manages to take the fight to the ground.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

Cote drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Cote jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position.
Cote trying to control the position from guard on top but OBrien is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

That's one minute gone in the round.
Cote is working OBrien over from the guard. He should look to pass the guard and do a little more damage with these strikes.
OBrien is working from a closed guard but he's struggling to control his opponent.
Cote trying to control but OBrien is working from the bottom.
Cote stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. OBrien swivels though and keeps the full guard.
OBrien on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if OBrien tries to get out of the position.

Cote thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
Cote trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

That's two minutes gone in the round.
There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fight is doing enough on the ground.

OBrien drives through with a really nice takedown into side control.
Cote sneaks a leg under to get back to half guard.
OBrien looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding.
OBrien prevents Cote from improving his position.
Cote is trying to control but can't.
Cote wants to sweep but OBrien has passed to side control!
OBrien in side control, just content to control the action for now.

That's three minutes gone in the round.

The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult.
OBrien stands up and beckons Cote to his feet.
Cote fails to land with a series of punches.
The sound of bone on bone echoes around the arena as OBrien checks a leg kick.
OBrien tries to clinch up.
Cote shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has OBrien pinned against the cage. OBrien gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
OBrien changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Cote tries to avoid it but OBrien manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Cote to the ground. Cote escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Earl OBrien. That's going to take a lot out of him.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
A bone on bone clash there as OBrien blocks the leg kick.

Cote closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.
OBrien lands an elbow inside that Cote shrugs off.
OBrien stalling here - the referee won't stand for too much of that.
Cote takes an elbow to the temple.
Cote fails to pull guard.

Cote tightens his grip and picks OBrien up, before dumping him to the ground. OBrien manages to land in guard.
OBrien looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Cote prevents OBrien from getting back to his feet.
The crowd applaud the fighters efforts here as the round comes to an end.
OBrien is trying to control the position from the bottom.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

Riley Cote dominated that round.
The fighters' corners scream their final instructions, as the referee calls time. Here we go, back to the action!


Cote misses with a takedown

and OBrien counters with a shoot takedown. Cote fights it but they end up in guard.
OBrien is taking a break and basically stalling. The referee will not allow him to do that for long.

Cote looking for a triangle here. OBrien is fighting it but it looks tight! Cote pulls the arm across and this one won't last much longer! Nope, OBrien is tapping out - this one is all over!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 0:33 of round 2, we have a winner by way of Submission (Triangle Choke). Riley Cote!
