Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
11 - 11 - 0, fighting out of London, Harry Davies! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
3 - 2 - 0, fighting out of London, Charlie Theron! The judges for this bout are Sam Margolis, Paul Tew and James Ackerman.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Davies darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard. Davies wants to pass to mount but Theron is defending the position. Davies prevents Theron from improving his position. Davies trying to control the action but Theron is working from the bottom. Theron is trying to maintain the position but Davies is very close to passing his half guard. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Davies is working for a submission of some sort.
That's one minute gone in the round. Theron is looking for a sweep. Davies is wise to his cunning plan and keeps the top position. Davies stands up out of the half guard. Davies moves away from the strike by Theron. Theron misses with a body shot.
Davies gets caught napping as Theron dives in and scores a takedown. Davies manages to retain guard.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Davies isolates an arm and boxes in a triangle. Theron stacks Davies on his neck as he steps over and passes to the side. He's now in a much more dominant position where he can look to do some serious damage. Nice move by Theron! Davies takes a big shot right to the temple there but he's taken it well.
Davies is in a tricky position. We've heard reports from his gym mates at The Seven Sins Grappling Academy that he's been drilling escapes, so let's see if he can get back to his feet. Davies is sneaking out the side here. He's bucked Theron off and has taken his back! Davies doesn't have the hooks in and Theron manages to turn into his guard.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff! The fighters are going at a pretty good pace and they're both starting to sweat now. Theron throwing shots from guard but he's hitting more mat than opponent. Theron passes Davies's right leg, so he's now in half guard. Davies has one foot on Theron's thigh - he pushes off and manages to get back to his feet. A telegraphed right hand from Theron misses the target. Theron misses with a body punch
and Davies counters with a head kick. Davies darts in and lands a nice takedown into half guard. Theron is looking to control Davies's leg but it's slowly edging free. Can Theron avoid being mounted?
That's three minutes gone in the round. Theron gets back to full guard.
Theron looking to hit a scissor sweep but Davies is one step ahead there. Theron keeping full guard, as Davies tries to pass. Theron is trying to control the position but Davies postures up. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
That's four minutes gone in the round. A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd. Davies won't allow Theron to sweep him here. Davies drops back, looking for a kneebar! Theron looks panicked! The fighters roll across the mat, one looking to finish, one looking to escape. Theron looks to have wriggled free... Yes, he's got his leg free and he's dived into side control! Good work there from Theron! Theron trying to control the action but Davies is working from the bottom. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
That was a close round but I would say that Harry Davies will probably get the nod. The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.
Theron throws a hook to the body but it doesn't connect.
Theron misses with a lunging right hand
and Davies counters with a flying knee. Nice. Davies tries to sprawl but Theron drives through with a takedown into half guard. Davies avoiding damage under a succession of punches from Theron. Theron scoring with strikes to the body and head. Davies moves into full guard.
Theron working some ground and pound from guard but it's not doing any damage. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Davies has a loose triangle. He'll be looking to tighten that up but Theron can see exactly what he's planning and manages to posture up and free himself. Theron trying to control but Davies is working from the bottom. Theron must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.
That's one minute gone in the round. Davies is trying to control the position but Theron postures up. Theron stands up and looks to throw the legs aside to pass to side control. Davies swivels though and keeps the full guard. Theron is sitting in close to Davies's body. Davies has gone for a guillotine from the bottom. Oh damn, that looks pretty tight! Theron is panicking - it looks like this one could be all over! Yes, Theron is tapping! That was a very nice submission by Davies.
