The bell rings for round one and we are underway!

Williams gets the takedown into side control.
Williams staying calm.

Williams stands up.
Smith tries to clinch but Williams moves out of range.
Smith tries for a takedown but Williams circles away easily

and Williams counters with a nice shoot takedown that brings the fighters to the ground.
Williams wants to control from the top but Smith keeps moving.

Smith throws his legs up looking for a submission but Williams uses it to pass to side control.

Smith is positioning himself to get back to half guard.

Williams thinks about going for a far side armbar but bails out and retains the dominant position instead.

Williams is trying to land an Americana. He has the arm isolated but Smith is keeping cool and he's avoided the danger for now.

A lull in the action here being met with boos from the crowd.
You can see the frustration on Smith's face, being in this tough position on the bottom.
Williams moving around in side mount but really he's just happy to control for now.
Smith is working hard to escape and get back to his feet. After a battle for position, Williams asserts his dominance and retains side control.

Williams is maintaining the dominant position - no doubt Smith will start to get frustrated soon if he's not already.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.

Smith really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Williams. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Williams wants to control the action here but instead Smith manages to pass to full mount!

Williams bucks up and manages to get a nice reversal! He's in guard on the top - nicely done!

Smith escapes his hips to the side and looks to be working for an armbar. Williams gives him a little smile and shakes his head. No chance.

Williams decides he's had enough of playing guard and decides to stand. Come on Smith, up you get!
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Smith tries for a takedown but Williams circles away easily

and Williams decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Smith's guard.

Smith wants to control but Williams passes easily into half guard.
Smith wants to control but Williams is keeping busy.
Williams looking to pass the half guard. Not this time.
Williams stops Smith from getting back to his feet.

Williams wants to work for an arm triangle but Smith is really keeping half guard well and defending the submission attempt.

Williams is looking for a kimura but Smith is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Williams to get the leverage.
Williams is trying to control the action in half guard but Smith is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.

so Williams counters with a double leg into guard. Good agility.

Rex Williams overall seems to be getting the better of the ground position in the fight so far.

Both fighters are breathing heavily.
Smith misses with a strike but at least he's keeping busy, looking to cause some damage - that will still help him when it comes to the judges scorecards.

Smith wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Williams, who protects the arm well.
Williams wants to control but Smith postures up.
Williams manages to land a sweep and he's now on top! Lovely Jiu Jitsu!
Smith is refusing to be controlled, as Williams sits in half guard.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.

Neither fighter is doing enough for the referee's liking and he's decided to stand them back up.
Williams takes a kick to the side of the head.

Smith gets in close and instigates a clinch.
Williams tries to pull guard but can't drag his opponent to the mat. Smith just stands there and leans against the cage.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Rex Williams. That's going to take a lot out of him.
The referee calls for Smith to work.
Knees in the clinch landing for Smith.

Smith successfully pulls guard.

Williams stands and steps away. Smith gets to his feet too and we're back to the striking game.
Williams avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Rex Williams is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.
Smith stuns Williams with a nice body shot, before stepping back out of range.

Smith looks for a takedown. He's got it. We're now in half guard.
Williams regains full guard. Nicely done.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Williams is trying to keep Smith in close.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Smith avoids a guillotine attempt easily.
Williams is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Smith is controlling him.

Williams is working an open guard here, looking to improve his position. No doubt that will leave him open to counters but at least he's being more offensive.
Rob Smith has stepped it up - he knows he needs a finish here!
Smith wants to control from the top but Williams keeps moving.
Smith wants to get up but he can't break Williams's closed guard. He needs to be careful trying to break the legs open, as he's open to submissions here.
