Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Montreal, Jay Armstrong! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
1 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Juan Carlos Ortiz! The judges for this bout are Alec Ball, Ian Loll and William Peck.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Armstrong misses the shot to the body. Armstrong lands a nice looking kick to the body. Ortiz takes a step back to recover. Ortiz misses the shot to the body. A big left from Armstrong misses. Ortiz throws a combination that misses and Armstrong counters with a good, hard body kick but Ortiz shrugs it off. Armstrong throws a head kick that looked like it stung.

Armstrong throws a nice outside leg kick. Armstrong connects with a leg kick. Ortiz looked like he was expecting something else and didn't defend it. Ortiz takes a head kick and keeps coming.

Armstrong tries to clinch up against the cage, rushing in to close the distance. Ortiz manages to break the clinch and circles back to the middle of the mat. Armstrong lands with a slapping head kick. Jay Armstrong seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout. Armstrong avoids a punch combination nicely.
Ortiz walks forward, straight into a front kick from Armstrong. Armstrong sizes up Ortiz with a pawing jab and scores with a straight right down the middle. Ortiz takes a kick to the side of the head. Ortiz lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Armstrong circles away quickly and effectively. Armstrong moves into range and lands a nice leg kick. Ortiz avoids the head kick by Armstrong.

and Ortiz counters with a three punch combo that has Armstrong backing up. Armstrong nods at Ortiz to acknowledge the strikes. Sloppy strikes from Ortiz. Those never looked like landing. Ortiz uses decent footwork to sidestep a right hand from Armstrong. Ortiz fails to land with the punch combination there - jab, cross, hook, miss, miss, miss.
Ortiz throws a right and a left that both miss. Armstrong throws a nice outside leg kick. Armstrong showing good head movement there, avoiding the strikes from Ortiz.

Ortiz fakes a head shot and lands one to the body. The crowd are loving this. Great action here. Ortiz looks to land a left hand but Armstrong moved out of range nicely. Armstrong misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Ortiz moves into range and throws a lovely three punch combination. Armstrong connects with a leg kick. He turned his hip over nicely there. Armstrong lands with a thumping leg kick.
Ortiz scores with a nice takedown into half guard. Let's see what he's got on the ground. Ortiz is trying to control the action in half guard but Armstrong is working away on the bottom, looking perhaps to get back to full guard. Ortiz winds up and cracks Armstrong with a swinging punch to the side of the head. Armstrong tries to kick Ortiz off but Ortiz keeps his base steady and stays in half guard. Armstrong punching from the bottom.
Ortiz looks towards his corner to check for any instructions. The corner give him nothing to work with, so he cracks Armstrong with a short hammerfist. I guess that's as good as any advice he could get in this position. Armstrong on his back here. We all know that wrestlers don't like being on their back so let's see if Armstrong tries to get out of the position. Ortiz is scoring with some nice ground and pound from the dominant position. The crowd applaud the fighters' efforts here as the round comes to an end. Armstrong is trying to maintain the position but Ortiz is very close to passing his half guard. Ortiz missing with some ground and pound from the half guard. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Jay Armstrong dominated that round. The cut man is working on Jay Armstrong's cut. The referee calls time. The cornermen exit stage left and we're back to business.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Armstrong moves away from the strike by Ortiz. Good leg kick by Armstrong there. It's the ones that make that thud noise that hurt and that was an almighty thud.

That's two minutes gone in the round. Armstrong connects with a lovely right hand, straight down the pipe. We've seen a great period of action over the last minute or so - credit to both fighters for going all out! Armstrong lands with a hook. Ortiz tried to avoid it but it clipped the top of his head. Ortiz tries to bum rush Armstrong with a series of wild strikes but Armstrong uses good footwork to avoid the assault. Ortiz moves his head to the side to avoid a jab but walks straight into a cross. Armstrong dances in quickly and lands a nice inside leg kick on Ortiz. That did some damage! The fighters are starting to perspire pretty heavily. Ouch! a nice leg kick from Armstrong, right into the meat.
Armstrong scores with a slapping inside leg kick. Armstrong throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land. Ortiz takes a head kick and keeps coming.
Ortiz throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Armstrong's waist but Armstrong gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Ortiz off to one side. Ortiz has a nice red mark on his side after a thudding body kick by Armstrong. Armstrong misses with a head kick.

Jay Armstrong is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs. Ortiz drives through with a takedown into Armstrong's guard. Let's see what he can do from the top position. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Ortiz sitting in guard, not really doing much. Ortiz wants to control from the top but Armstrong keeps moving. Ortiz landing with the ground and pound. Ortiz trying to control the position from guard on top but Armstrong is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Ortiz drops back for a leg! It's a sloppy attempt though and Ortiz jumps back into guard quickly, to retain the dominant position. Armstrong lands a beautiful sweep and he's now moved into his opponent's guard. Ortiz trying to punch from his back but it's not doing any damage.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Ortiz trying to control the position here. Ortiz trying to keep a closed guard but Armstrong is proving a slippery customer.
Armstrong postures up in Ortiz's guard and throws a big left but Ortiz blocks it. Armstrong slows down the pace of the fight for a moment. He'll need to remain active if he doesn't want to see the fight stood back up. Armstrong forces his way into half guard. Armstrong controlling the action here. And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Jay Armstrong dominated that second round. The cut man is working on Jay Armstrong's cut. The fighters get back to their feet, the hooter sounds and we're back to the action! This is the final round!
Ortiz ducks down and throws a hook to the body but Armstrong moves away. Armstrong lands a leg kick and bounces back out of range. Some wild striking there from Ortiz.
Ortiz has developed a nice purple lump on his ribcage, as a result of some heavy body kicks from Armstrong. Armstrong scores with the left hand. Ortiz knows he should have avoided that one. Ortiz drops his hands momentarily and Armstrong takes advantage with a crisp shot to the head. Ortiz throws a hook but Armstrong avoids it easily. Ortiz on the wrong end of a nice low kick. He's acting like it's no big deal but he doesn't want to take many more of those. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. An inside leg kick lands from Armstrong. Ortiz misses with a two punch combination.
Ortiz shoots in for a double leg but Armstrong sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy. Ortiz has his front leg slapped to the side - a nice low kick landing there from Armstrong. Armstrong lands a nice shot to the body.
That's one minute gone in the round. Armstrong scores with a punch to the head. Ortiz scores with a reasonable looking shot to the body. Armstrong doesn't seem bothered though. Armstrong throws a nice outside leg kick. A solid body kick from Armstrong. Armstrong fakes a couple of low kicks, before throwing one on the third attempt. It connects and Ortiz has to reset his feet before getting ready to engage. Ortiz throws an off balance right hand
and Armstrong counters with a nice low kick that buckles Ortiz's knee momentarily. Ortiz throws a combination but comes up with nothing but fresh air.
Armstrong throws a quick inside leg kick. Armstrong is really dominating this fight. Is there anything that Ortiz can do to turn this around? Excellent takedown into side control there by Ortiz. Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd. Ortiz in side control, throwing shots but Armstrong defends. Armstrong holds on to Ortiz's head and controls the position momentarily. Armstrong taking punishment in the form of punches.
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Armstrong is looking to work his way out of this bad position but Ortiz is controlling him well. Armstrong takes an elbow right on the bridge of the nose and winces in pain.
Armstrong tries to buck Ortiz off but Ortiz is having none of it. Armstrong takes a nasty elbow to the side of the head. Ortiz cracks Armstrong with an elbow. That is naaassty. Ortiz throwing shots but missing, from side control. Ortiz lands a knee to the body and follows it up with some ground and pound to the head. That will wear Armstrong down.
Armstrong is trying to control Ortiz's posture but Ortiz avoids it. Sloppy strikes there by Ortiz. Armstrong striking from the bottom but nothing landed.
Armstrong is trying to escape and get back to his feet. Juan Carlos Ortiz has got the better of the ground game so far.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Ortiz tries for a kimura. Not really close to a finish though. Armstrong manages to get back to half guard. Ortiz wants to free his trapped foot but Armstrong is holding on for dear life with his legs. Ortiz missing with some ground and pound from the half guard. Armstrong moves into full guard.
Armstrong is trying to stand up but he's not managed so far.
That's four minutes gone in the round. The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action. There's a bit of a scramble here and now Armstrong is on top in guard.
Ortiz pulls Armstrong in close to prevent any damage. Ortiz looking to sweep using the butterfly guard but Armstrong puts pay to that idea as he passes nicely into half guard. Ortiz keeping his head moving to avoid the ground and pound. Armstrong missing with the ground and pound from half guard. Ortiz moves his hips nicely and gets into full guard. Ortiz keeping moving, preventing Armstrong from controlling successfully.
And that's the end of the fight! That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to Jay Armstrong. Well I reckon that's a shut out for Armstrong, winning every round. Will the judges agree? They are the ones who matter, even if they are often depressingly incompetent.
