PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a welterweight MMA rules bout between Rudi Voeller (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Jay Bilger (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Bilger has chosen its all fun and games as his entrance music. I'm sure you'll be fascinated to know that I was talking to some pointless Z list celebrity before the fight and he thought that Jay Bilger was going to win. Let's see if he was right.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 5 rounds, for the welterweight championship of the world!
Introducing the champion to my left, fighting out of the red corner.

And introducing the challenger to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.

The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Voeller tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
A head kick misses from Voeller.

Bilger gets taken down but at least he's managed to land in guard.
Bilger is controlling Voeller's posture.
Bilger is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Voeller is controlling him.
Bilger is trying to control the position from the bottom.
Bilger is wriggling around but Voeller manages to pass to half guard.
Bilger has no desire to be mounted, so is trying to control. Voeller is working away from the top position though.

Bilger is trying to avoid being dragged into an even worse position than he's already in but Voeller is staying active.

Voeller is looking for a kimura but Bilger is holding onto that half guard position, so it's hard for Voeller to get the leverage.

It looks like we're going to have a standup here. Neither fighter is doing enough on the ground.
Voeller loads up on a big right hand but Bilger slips the punch.
Voeller misses with a half-hearted attempt at a head kick.
Bilger avoids the head kick by Voeller.
Voeller looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Bilger is fending him off so far but Voeller persists. Nope, Bilger circles away and we're back to standing.

There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action.
Voeller stumbles momentarily as he takes a strong leg kick from Bilger.
Voeller is breathing heavily.
Voeller shoots in for a double leg but Bilger sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Bilger moves in looking to clinch but Voeller pushes him off.
Bilger avoids the head kick by Voeller.
Bilger is looking to clinch.
Voeller avoids the clinch attempt nicely.
Voeller pulls out of a head kick attempt.

Bilger closes the distance and presses his opponent up against the cage.

Bilger gets double underhooks and manages to take the fight to the ground.

Bilger tries to clinch but is not successful on this occasion.

Bilger clinches up with Voeller and pushes him back against the cage.

Bilger is looking to stand up but Voeller isn't so interested in that idea.

Bilger has his feet on Voeller's hips. He pushes off and gets to his feet. Nice work.

Bilger has Voeller up against the cage in a clinch.
Voeller is pressed up against the cage. Bilger has hold of a leg and is looking to drag Voeller down to the mat. Voeller avoids the attempt though and has circled away. We're back to striking at a distance.

Voeller throws a sloppy head kick and Bilger moves out of range easily.
Voeller tries a head kick but it misses.
Voeller throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

Bilger shoots in for a takedown and gets it.
Bilger tries to stand but his arm is trapped.
The referee calls for the fighters to work.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.


Voeller throws a sloppy head kick and Bilger moves out of range easily.
Bilger tries to shoot in for a takedown. He's got hold of a leg but Voeller swivels and escapes.

Jay Bilger is looking to throw some combinations by the looks of things.

Bilger connects with a vicious head kick that knocks Voeller to the floor! Bilger dives in looking for the finish!


Voeller is rocked!
The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing.

Bilger postures up and decides to stand up, from the half guard. The ref calls for Voeller to stand up.
Oh Voeller is still all over the place! His legs are completely gone! Will he be able to recover?!!

Bilger pushes Voeller up against the cage in a clinch.
Bilger pushes Voeller back against the cage and lands a hook to the side of the head.

Voeller changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Bilger fights it off and pushes away nicely.
Voeller seems to have got his legs back now.
Both fighters are absolutely exhausted here.
Bilger doesn't manage to clinch there - Voeller circles away.

Bilger closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.

Bilger wants to stand up but Voeller has a hold of him and won't allow it.

This has been an exciting period of action!

and Bilger counters with a nice double leg into side control. Voeller won't be happy with that.
Voeller tries to buck Bilger off but Bilger is having none of it.

Bilger tries for an arm triangle. That looks pretty tight to me. Is this one over!?! Possibly, maybe, no Bilger has let go of the choke. Obviously it wasn't as tight as we thought!

Bilger decides to take the fight back to the feet.

Voeller gets his takedown attempt stuffed easily

and Bilger counters by moving into the clinch.
Voeller tries to jump guard but he falls flat on his backside. Bilger smiles and moves away.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for Rudi Voeller. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Voeller throws a lazy head kick

and Bilger decides to take the opportunity to score a takedown. He's landed in Voeller's guard.

Bilger decides to stand up and beckons his opponent to follow.

Bilger trying to control the position from guard on top but Voeller is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can.
As the round comes to an end the crowd are showing their appreciation for a great round of action.

Jay Bilger showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards.

and Bilger holds on and brings the fighters into a clinch.
Bilger gets double underhooks to prevent a takedown attempt from Voeller.
Bilger is trying to drag Voeller to the mat but Voeller just about manages to keep his footing. He used the cage to his advantage there.
Bilger drops down for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Bilger takes a big intake of breath there - he's definitely tired.

We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Voeller lands a nice trip takedown into half guard.

Voeller seems to be looking for submissions.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.

Bilger kicks Voeller off and gets back to his feet.
Voeller throws a head kick that misses and slips in the process. He scrambles back to his feet and the fighters circle.

Bilger is looking to clinch but Voeller is avoiding it.

Bilger tries to close the distance and clinch up against the cage but Voeller paws at him with a jab and circles away.
Bilger changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Voeller tries to avoid it but Bilger manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Voeller to the ground. Voeller escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Rudi Voeller has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Jay Bilger.

Bilger has been the more effective fighter overall so far.

and Bilger counters with a shoot takedown. Voeller fights it but they end up in guard.
The crowd are loving this. Great action here.
Voeller has a closed guard, preventing Bilger from standing up.
Bilger wants to control from the top but Voeller keeps moving.

Bilger wants to stand but Voeller is controlling his posture from full guard.
Bilger wants to stand and escape but instead Voeller has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

Voeller has his foot on Bilger's thigh. He's trying to push off and get in position for a triangle, I think. Bilger works his way back into a safe position though.

Bilger wants to stand and escape but instead Voeller has hit a sweep and he's now on top in guard.
It's got to the stage where if one of these guys blows hard enough, the other might fall over.

Voeller is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Bilger is just riding it out for now. Voeller eventually gives up the hold.

The crowd are getting on the fighters' backs, as the pace has dropped off in the last minute or so.
Bilger is looking to escape.

Voeller is trying to work for a kimura. He's got his hands clasped together - this could be trouble! No, Bilger has managed to free his arm - good work.
Bilger looks like he's trying to stand up.

Bilger tries to get to full guard but Voeller has control of the leg.
Bilger tries to push off, looking to stand up, but Voeller manages to move to mount!
Bilger wants to hold on but Voeller pushes him away.

The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.

Voeller has control of Bilger's right arm, working for a kimura. It's a bit of a token attempt though and Bilger regains control of the situation pretty easily.
Bilger wants to control but Voeller is having none of it.
Bilger is trying to stand up.

A close fourth round but Jay Bilger will probably get the nod - 10:9.

Bilger tries to get to his feet, scrambling wildly. Voeller sees the opportunity and transitions to an armbar that forces Bilger to tap. Impressive finish!
