PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between John Nichols (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Robbie Maximus (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). John Nichols is staring across the cage at his opponent, tweaking his nipples... Tweaking his own nipples that is.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of The Island, John Nichols!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 1 - 2 - 0, fighting out of The Island, Robbie Maximus!
The judges for this bout are Daniel Franklin, Peter Branson and Bart Greer.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
Maximus throws a low kick but it's checked well by Nichols.
Maximus swats away the attempt to clinch by Nichols.
A telegraphed takedown attempt from Maximus is defended easily by Nichols.
Maximus tries to close the distance and clinch but Nichols swats him to one side with an open hand palm strike and circles away.
Maximus tries a switch kick but it misses it's target.
Nichols shoots in for a takedown. "Ole!" shouts Maximus as he jumps to the side.
Nichols shoots in for a takedown - he's clinched up with Maximus but Maximus pushes him off and we're back to square one.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Nichols fails with the takedown.
That's three failed takedown attempts in the round for John Nichols. That's going to take a lot out of him.
Maximus shoots in looking for a takedown. Nichols tries to sprawl out of it but Maximus keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Nichols manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing.
Maximus pulls out of a head kick attempt.

Maximus feints and as Nichols raises his hands in defense, Maximus changes levels and drives through with a takedown into guard.
Maximus controlling from the top position.
Nichols keeping moving, preventing Maximus from controlling successfully.
Nichols pulls Maximus in to control the position.

Nichols looking for submissions off his back, moving his hips, looking for an opening.
Nichols not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.

Maximus postures up to throw the ground and pound strikes but they don't connect.

Maximus got a little sloppy there for a moment and Nichols has worked his way into a loose triangle - can he finish it?! No, Maximus has managed to get both his arms back between Nichols's legs - danger averted.
The referee is asking the fighters to pick up the pace.
A big thud reverberates around the arena there as Maximus accidentally thumps the mat. Hopefully he's not broken his hand.

The referee decides to stand the fighters back up.
Maximus wants to clinch.
Maximus shoots in with a takedown attempt and he has Nichols pinned against the cage. Nichols gets the underhooks and manages to circle away.
Maximus closes the distance and clinches up with Nichols, looking for a takedown. Maximus pushes Nichols against the cage but Nichols circles to the side and manages to break the clinch.

That's three minutes gone in the round.
Nichols throws a right and a left that Maximus avoids nicely.
Maximus shoots in for a double leg but Nichols sprawls well. That's going to sap some energy.
Nichols misses the shot to the body.
Maximus shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Nichols sprawls well. Nichols wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Maximus gets slowly back to his feet.
Nichols changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Maximus tries to avoid it but Nichols manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Maximus to the ground. Maximus escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Horrible takedown attempt by Nichols or perhaps it was just good defense by Maximus, which made it look bad.
Maximus's jab looks to have found its range, popping Nichols under the eye.
Maximus shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it.
Nichols is trying hard to land a takedown here. Maximus sprawls well and keeps this one on the feet.
Nichols really is a fat lump.

Maximus slaps away a takedown attempt from Nichols, before circling back to the center of the mat.
Nichols is breathing heavily.
Nichols throws a sloppy head kick and Maximus moves out of range easily.
Maximus rushes forward with a series of wild hooks but Nichols moves out of range and avoids them all easily.
Maximus shoots in for a takedown but Nichols shows good takedown defense there and keeps this one on the feet.
No luck for Maximus with that takedown attempt.

Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out!

Maximus closes the distance and clinches up, looking for a takedown. He shifts his weight and gets a nice trip into half guard.
The fans in attendance giving it up for the two fighters, who have really let it all hang out in the last minute or so!
Nichols moves into full guard.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

That's the end of the round. The referee orders the cornermen out of the cage so we can get back down to business.



Nichols fakes with an overhand right and moves in to clinch with Maximus, pushing him back against the cage.
Maximus working hard to break the clinch.
Nichols can't get the takedown.
Nichols is trying to pull guard but Maximus turns him against the cage and we stay in the clinch.

Maximus has hold of one of Nichols's legs. Nichols is fighting the takedown attempt but Maximus gets the trip and lands the takedown into guard.
Nichols trying to punch from his back but it's not doing any damage.
Maximus stays in close to Nichols's body and controls the position.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.
Nichols looking to sweep here. No luck so far.
Maximus must be cautious of submissions here, given that his opponent has the superior Jiu Jitsu.

Maximus gets to his feet - Nichols follows without any prompting.
Robbie Maximus seems to be getting the better of the standup.
Nichols tries to clinch there but Maximus circles away.
Horrible takedown attempt by Maximus or perhaps it was just good defense by Nichols, which made it look bad.

Good leg kick by Nichols there. It's the ones that make that thud noise that hurt and that was an almighty thud.

Maximus tries to drive through with a takedown attempt but Nichols defends well and Maximus ends up having to push Nichols into the cage where they will battle it out in the clinch.

Nichols pushes off and circles away, back to the middle of the mat.
Maximus throws a looping left and ducks down for a takedown. He's got his arms around Nichols's waist but Nichols gets an underhook and avoids the takedown by throwing Maximus off to one side.
A looping hook to the body misses from Nichols. Maximus does a little dance to reset his feet.
Nichols has a takedown stuffed.
Maximus has been the more effective fighter overall so far.
Nichols feints with a shoulder and throws a nice leg kick to Maximus's calf.
Maximus fails with a rather predictable takedown attempt.

Nichols shuffles to his left behind two crisp jabs. Maximus eats them both and turns towards Nichols to reposition himself and eats a stinging right hand-left hook combo.
A really sloppy takedown attempt there from Nichols.
Nichols fakes the leg kick and cracks Maximus in the body.
Maximus takes a thudding leg kick, right into the meat of the thigh.
Maximus is looking to take this fight into the clinch.
Nichols fakes a jab and then connects with a hook.
Maximus changes levels and looks for a double leg takedown. Nichols tries to avoid it but Maximus manages to keep hold of a leg and drag Nichols to the ground. Nichols escapes though and pops straight back up to his feet.
Nichols throws a series of punches but Maximus avoids them all with ease.

Nichols really is built like a bowling ball. I wonder if he'd roll if you pushed him down a hill...
Maximus tries to score a power double leg takedown but Nichols sees that one coming and sprawls well. That will dishearten Maximus somewhat.

Maximus tries to land a knee to the head but Nichols blocks with his arms.

Nichols breaks from the clinch.
Nichols swings and misses with a hook to the body.
No luck for Maximus with that takedown attempt.
Nichols fakes high and shoots in for a takedown but Maximus avoids it really well and circles away.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up.

Nichols breaks the clinch and we return to the middle of the mat.
Nichols looks for a takedown here. Will he get it? Maximus is fending him off so far but Nichols persists. Nope, Maximus circles away and we're back to standing.

Maximus looking to shoot here. He's gone for it and he's landed a takedown into side control! Oh, that's bad for Nichols!
Nichols tries to bench press Maximus off him but Maximus keeps the position.
Maximus trying to control the position but Nichols is working away.
This has been an exciting period of action!
Maximus tries to cartwheel into mount but he doesn't manage it.

Nichols is not content to let Maximus control the position.
Nichols is trying to control Maximus's posture but Maximus avoids it.
Nichols wants to get back to his feet.
We may be looking at a referee standup if the pace doesn't pick up soon.

That's four minutes gone in the round.
The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight.
Nichols is trying to control Maximus's posture but Maximus avoids it.

The referee has stepped in and called for a break in the action. We'll restart on the feet.

Maximus looking to score a takedown here. Nichols is defending well but Maximus drives through and ends up in Nichols's guard.
Maximus really doesn't want to stay on the ground with Nichols. If he can't get it back to his feet, it's only a matter of time before he'll be tapping out.
Maximus wants to control from the top but Nichols keeps moving.

Nichols has managed to wall walk up one of the corner posts to get back to his feet. Maximus is pushing him up against the cage, looking to control the position.
The crowd thankful this round is nearly over.
Maximus wants to get back to striking at distance but Nichols won't allow it.

And that's the end of the fight!
That was a close round. You could make an argument for either fighter but I would give it to John Nichols.
I think Nichols has won this one but let's see what the judges have to say. Over to the ring announcer for the scorecards.
