PBP Commentary |
Coming up we have a bantamweight MMA rules bout between Mervin Tanner (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Rich Quan (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Rich Quan told me before the fight that he's been watching a lot of DVDs so let's see if that helps him in this one! I can't wait to find out!

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the bantamweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Mervin Tanner! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
0 - 0 - 0, fighting out of Tokyo, Rich Quan! The judges for this bout are Sosuke Kotani, Yuuki Gou and Shirou Masuda.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Quan fails in his attempt to clinch. Quan takes a step back and watches a body kick go sailing past his mid section.
Tanner gets a double leg takedown into Quan's guard. There's a bit of a scramble here and now Quan is on top in guard.
Quan trying to control the position from guard on top but Tanner is wriggling around, looking for whatever he can. Quan trying to pass the guard but can't manage it just yet. Tanner looking to control.
Tanner is working actively off his back, looking to secure an arm or perhaps work for a triangle. Tanner is trying to control the position but Quan postures up. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Quan is frustrating his opponent with some stalling tactics from top position. Quan passes Tanner's left leg - he's now in half guard.
That's one minute gone in the round. Quan is taking a breather. Tanner says something to him but it's hard to make out. Perhaps he's telling him to get on with it and actually do something. Tanner wants to control but Quan is keeping busy.
Quan is looking to advance position but Tanner won't allow it. Tanner trying to control here.
Tanner desperately trying to maintain half guard. Tanner is not content to let Quan control the position.
That's two minutes gone in the round. There's not a lot going on here and the crowd are letting the fighters know they're not willing to tolerate a lack of action. Quan is pressing down on Tanner's thigh, looking to free his foot. Tanner is holding on for now. Quan is sneakily working for an arm triangle but Tanner sees it coming and defends easily. Tanner is trying to control but can't.
Quan is looking to pass the guard... He's managed it - he's now in full mount! The fighters are starting to get a bit slippery now, which will make submissions a bit more difficult. Quan with good strikes from the mount here! Quan has hold of Tanner's left arm, perhaps looking for a submission. The two fighters tussle over control of the isolated limb and Tanner manages to get his arm back to his side and away from danger.
Quan breaks from Tanner's wrist control and lands an elbow.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Tanner keeping his composure momentarily, calmly looking to get back to half guard.
Tanner wants to control but Quan is having none of it. Quan controlling from the full mount. Tanner is squirming around, avoiding Quan's attempts to control the action. Quan controlling the position easily from mount. Quan landing strikes, looking to finish!
That's four minutes gone in the round. Quan avoids the attempt from Tanner to control. Quan controlling the position easily from mount. Tanner wants to hold on but Quan pushes him away. Quan looking to secure an arm triangle but Tanner defends it well. Tanner tries to hold on but Quan postures up. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Rich Quan dominated that round. That's time! Back to the action!
Tanner gets caught napping as Quan dives in and scores a takedown. Tanner manages to retain guard. Tanner has his hands on Quan's head, controlling the position. Tanner is looking to get back to his feet but can't, whilst Quan is controlling him. Quan working in close now, lands a nice elbow to the side of Tanner's head. The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work. Quan tries to stand but Tanner is controlling from the bottom. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Tanner controls Quan momentarily but Quan frees himself. Quan thinks about going for a leg but decides against it, in order to maintain the position.
That's one minute gone in the round. Quan slows down the pace of the fight, as he sits in guard. Quan with a couple of shots to the head there. Not particularly brutal. Quan trying to control but Tanner is working from the bottom. Quan looking to control the position here, rather than advance. Quan tries to stand but Tanner is controlling from the bottom.
The referee has motioned to the fighters to stand back up. He just wasn't happy with the level of activity.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are starting to boo a lack of action. Quan shoots in looking for a single leg takedown. Tanner is trying to defend but Quan finishes it well and ends up in half guard. Let's see if he can advance position further. Tanner won't allow Quan to pass to mount. Tanner looking to work for a kimura from the bottom. Quan looks over to his corner - he wants some instructions but his corner are not responding. Tanner is trying to control but can't.
Still in half guard, Quan seems content to control.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Tanner trying to control here but he's found himself mounted! Oh no!
Quan lands a big elbow. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Tanner tries to reverse the position but Quan maintains control. Quan controlling the pace for now. Tanner tries to hold on but Quan pushes him away. The crowd growing excited in anticipation of a finish here! Right on cue, Quan cracks his opponent with a massive right hand that draws loud cheers!
Quan breaks from Tanner's wrist control and lands an elbow. Quan lands a couple of nice shots there from mount.
Quan controlling the position easily from mount. Let's hope that Quan has the urge to step up the pace any second now because for the last 15 or 20 seconds he's just been holding on tight.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Tanner tries to hold on but Quan postures up. Quan has been the more effective fighter overall so far. Quan trying to control but he's not successful this time. Rich Quan has got the better of the ground game so far. Quan lands a big shot there that rocks Tanner but he's holding on and managing to survive for now.
Tanner can't escape the position.
Quan controlling the pace for now. Quan wants to control the pace but Tanner is squirming around nicely. The crowd cheering loudly, showing their appreciation for the quality fight we're seeing here. Boooooooooooooooooooo!!! God, this has been a terrible round. Come on you two, sort yourselves out! Tanner is in a horrible position here. Quan smacks him with another shot as he tries to escape the position.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.
Rich Quan showed his class in that round. I'd imagine he'll take it on all the scorecards. That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action. This is the final round!
Tanner shoots in looking for a takedown. Quan tries to sprawl out of it but Tanner keeps driving through. The fighters are pinned against the cage. Quan manages to get underhooks and after a bit of a struggle, circles away and we're back to standing. Quan shoots in for a takedown from distance. He catches Tanner napping and manages to drive through into side control! Quan controls the position. Quan tries to get to his feet but he's trapped momentarily. Tanner defending against the ground and pound. We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Quan remains in side control and seems content to stay there. It's a versatile position from which he can work both strikes and submissions, whilst maintaining that control, so maybe he'll sit here for a while. Quan wants to lay and pray for a moment but Tanner keeps working.
That's one minute gone in the round. Quan decides to stand back up. Excellent takedown into side control there by Quan. Quan lands a knee to the body and a forearm to the face. Tanner wants to escape from the position here - easier said than done! Quan has knee on belly and now moves to full mount! Trouble for Tanner! Quan can't quite control the action as he would like just now, as Tanner is looking to escape.
That's two minutes gone in the round. Tanner is writhing around trying to get back to his feet. Quan sitting in mount, just looking to control for the moment. Quan avoids the attempt from Tanner to control. Quan tries to control but Tanner wriggling away. Tanner wants to control but Quan is having none of it.
That's three minutes gone in the round. Tanner is in a horrible position here. Quan smacks him with another shot as he tries to escape the position.
Tanner is writhing around trying to get back to his feet. Quan cracks Tanner with a nasty head shot there - the crowd let out an audible gasp there, as the noise reverberated around the arena.
Tanner tries to control the position but Quan now has his back.
Tanner turns into Quan and is now in his guard.
Both fighters are breathing heavily. Quan has a closed guard, preventing Tanner from standing up. Quan wants to sweep but no luck. Quan pulls Tanner in to control the position. Tanner wants to control from the top but Quan keeps moving.
That's four minutes gone in the round. Quan looking to try and escape his hips here, looking for a submission. It looks like he's going for a triangle but Tanner is defending well. Quan quickly switches to an armbar and extends the arm! Tanner has no choice but to tap, to a very quick submission! Wow, that was lightning fast! Quan celebrates on the cage, with the crowd.
