Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division. Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner. With a record of
2 - 1 - 0, fighting out of Los Angeles, Junior Harris! And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner. With a record of
2 - 2 - 0, fighting out of Las Vegas, Henk Jan Van Gompel! The judges for this bout are Columbo Gatti, David Schapiro and Lou da Vinci.
The bell rings for round one and we are underway! Harris fakes an overhand right and shoots for a takedown. Van Gompel sprawls well initially but Harris persists and gets the takedown into half guard. Harris trying to control from half guard but Van Gompel is working away. Harris is trying for a guillotine from the top but the pressure isn't in the right place so Van Gompel is just riding it out for now. Harris eventually gives up the hold. We've been hearing good reports from Harris's training camp. Apparently he has been rolling around with some good quality BJJ practitioners and has been sharpening his skills. Let's see if that has an impact on the fight today. Van Gompel trying to control but Harris postures up.
We've had a slow start to the round here - hopefully the action picks up. Van Gompel wants to improve his position but Harris is controlling well.
Harris is working for a submission of some sort.
That's one minute gone in the round. Van Gompel tries to get to full guard but Harris has control of the leg. Harris trying to control the action but Van Gompel is working from the bottom. The ref warns both fighters not to hold the cage as they work up against the meshing. Harris is going to have to think about doing something other than just controlling because Van Gompel is managing to avoid having the position dictated to him. The referee looks like he's ready to step in and stand the fighters back up.
The referee has decided to stand the fighters back up, so we'll restart on the feet. Harris shoots in for a takedown but doesn't get it. No luck for Van Gompel with that takedown attempt.
That's two minutes gone in the round. The crowd are hurling abuse towards the fighters... You can hardly blame them though because there isn't a lot going on in the fight. Harris swings away with a leg kick that misses. Harris shoots in for a takedown. He's persisting with it as Van Gompel sprawls well. Van Gompel wins this battle and keeps the fight standing. Harris gets slowly back to his feet. Harris has managed to pull guard. Let's see whether he can work an aggressive guard. It will also be interesting to see what tactics Van Gompel uses from the top position. Harris keeping moving, preventing Van Gompel from controlling successfully. Van Gompel throws a big elbow that misses. Harris knows he needs to get back to his feet asap. He's simply no match for Van Gompel on the ground. Harris working the defensive guard well to avoid strikes from Van Gompel. Van Gompel slips nicely into half guard. Van Gompel has hold of the far side arm. He's working for the Kimura, can Harris defend it? Van Gompel steps over the head and cranks it - Harris is tapping out! That was textbook stuff right there - nice submission victory for Van Gompel!
