PBP Commentary

Coming up we have a lightweight MMA rules bout between Sam Urai (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class) and Ricardo Mendes (ranked 0 p4p, 0 weight class). Urai's ring entrance music is that housewives' favourite, Sever the Wicked. Both fighters look fresh as a daisy as they make their way towards the cage.

Ladies and gentlemen. This fight is 3 rounds, in the lightweight division.
Introducing the fighter to my left, fighting out of the red corner.
With a record of 7 - 3 - 0, fighting out of London, Sam Urai!
And introducing the fighter to my right, fighting out of the blue corner.
With a record of 5 - 2 - 0, fighting out of London, Ricardo Mendes!
The judges for this bout are Steven Brown, Donald Grub and James Ackerman.




The bell rings for round one and we are underway!
A punch lands to the side of Urai 's head but he takes it in his stride.


It looks like Sam Urai has been cut.
Boom, another hit is landed. "You're gunna get knocked out" taunts Mendes, as that shot connected.

Mendes closes the distance, clinches up and gets a nice trip takedown into side control. Very smooth.

Mendes tries for a kimura but Urai is defending well.
Urai is trying to improve his position.
Mendes throws a knee to the body but it doesn't do much damage.

Mendes goes for an armbar here - this could be all over! But no, Urai has escaped beautifully and is now on top in side control! Oh, that's unlucky for Mendes but great work by Urai.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!
Mendes tries to bench press Urai off him but Urai keeps the position.
Urai controls the position.

Urai wants to work for a kimura but he's foiled early by Mendes, who protects the arm well.

Urai is looking to take a break and control but Mendes is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
Mendes is trying to work for a sweep but Urai has mounted him!
Urai wants to take his opponent's back but Mendes doesn't allow it.
Mendes sneaks a leg under to get to half guard.
Urai has been talking about how he's improved his wrestling in the run up to the fight so let's see if that's enough to sway the balance.
Urai is working hard to pass the guard. He's done it - he's now in full mount! Trouble for Mendes!

Urai is looking to stand but Urai has his arms wrapped tightly around him, looking to prevent the damage.
Urai manages to capitalize on a mistake by Mendes to take his back!
Urai has good solid back control here.
Mendes is defending well here and trying to improve his position.
Mendes just trying to survive but Urai is wriggling into a better position, looking to finish.
Mendes tries to escape the position - he's now mounted. Is that better or worse? Hard to tell!

Urai takes a step back and watches a body kick go sailing past his mid section.
Mendes scores with a jab to the body.

Urai takes a jab on the nose there. A little bit of blood seems to be coming out. Hopefully that won't affect his breathing.

Mendes dips to his left and cracks Urai with an uppercut!
Mendes throws a jab but it's blocked by Urai.

and Urai counters with a leg kick that reverborates around the arena.
Mendes throws a body punch but Urai moves out of range.

Sam Urai is looking to keep the fight on the feet at all costs.

Mendes closes the distance and after a bit of a stuggle, scores a takedown into Urai's guard.
This has been an exciting period of action!

Urai is throwing his legs up, looking for submissions. Mendes is aware though and is defending well.

Urai not looking particularly offensive just at the moment.
Urai preventing the ground and pound from doing any damage.
The fighters are pressed up against the cage, both looking to find a bit of space to work.
Mendes looking to pass the guard.

Mendes drops back looking for a heel hook - he quickly realises he's not going to get it but Urai manages to dive on top of him before he can escape and now Mendes has Urai in his guard.


Mendes is looking for a triangle here but Urai uses the submission attempt to pass into side control.
Urai is looking to take a break and control but Mendes is keeping him honest, looking to work from the bottom.
And that’s the end of the round – the fighters go back to their corners.

A close round but Ricardo Mendes will probably get the nod.

That's the end of the interval. I'm sure that seemed a lot quicker than a minute for our two fighters! Back to the action.

Urai rushes Mendes and presses him up against the cage.
Mendes changes levels and goes for a takedown here. Urai fights it off and pushes away nicely.

Ricardo Mendes seems to be the more aggressive standup fighter in this bout.
Urai throws out a powerful jab.


It looks like Ricardo Mendes has been cut.
Urai lands a nice shot that snaps Mendes's head back.
Mendes lands with an uppercut that bounces Urai off the cage and back into range.
Mendes bobbing and weaving, closes the distance and lands a hook to the side of Urai's head.
Mendes throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
Urai steps to the side to avoid the strikes from Mendes.
Mendes lands with a nice combination. Urai backs away looking to recover.
This is a great period of action - very entertaining stuff!

and Urai counters with a good right hand that lands right on the jaw.
Mendes attempts a low kick but it misses it's target.
Urai avoids a kick to the body.

Urai slips a jab from Mendes.
Urai throwing a counter right hand but Mendes manages to avoid it.
Mendes fakes a jab and then connects with a hook.
A swing and a miss from Mendes.
Mendes connects with a hook to the side of his opponent's head.
Mendes lands with a cross to side of his opponent's head.
Urai slips in close and lands a nice hook before moving back out of range.
Urai throws a monster uppercut resembling something out of street fighter but it doesn't land.
Mendes darts in looking for a takedown but Urai gets double underhooks and turns Mendes into the cage.
Mendes uses good footwork to get in and out and land a nice right hand before Urai has time to react.
Mendes throws out a loose jab but Urai uses good head movement to avoid it.
Good exchange - Mendes coming out on top.
Mendes misses the jab.
Urai appeared to be looking to counter that last move with a leg kick.
Mendes throws a leg kick that is checked
and Urai counters with a crisp hook to the side of the head.

Fantastic stuff here - a very entertaining period of action, which has drawn cheers from the crowd.
Urai takes a big uppercut there. He seems a bit wobbly but no, he's OK.
Mendes misses with a wild body shot.
It looked like Urai wanted to counter with a hook but didn't fully commit.
Mendes missing with a left hand there. Urai was out of range so wasted energy throwing that one.

Oooooooooooh, not good. A low kick from Mendes lands where it shouldn't have, right in the... well, you know what he did? He kicked him in the penis. He's injured, injured bad. The referee sends both fighters to their corners and Urai has 5 minutes to recover. He's OK now though... a thumbs up from Urai and we're back underway with a touch of gloves.

Sam Urai has stuffed three takedown attempts in the round now. That's going to take a lot out of Ricardo Mendes.
Urai throws a jab to the body, straight down the pipe. Boom. That sent Mendes stumbling backwards but he manages to regain his composure quickly.
Urai walks into a stiff left hand from Mendes.

Mendes throws a looping overhand right but Urai ducks down to avoid it.

and Urai counters with a straight right hand.
Mendes keeps his opponent at a distance with a nice jab.

Urai looks like he's developed a pretty tasty lump over his left eye. He'll need to avoid taking much more damage to that.

and Urai counters with a good low kick that Mendes was not able to check.

Mendes lunges in with swinging rights and lefts but Urai circles away quickly and effectively.

and Urai counters with a nice right hand that sends Mendes toppling to the canvas! Mendes scrambles and gets back to his feet - can Urai finish him?!

and Urai counters with a deadly accurate combination that rocks Mendes badly! He tries to strike back but Urai puts an end to that with another precision combo that knocks Mendes out cold! Oh man, Mendes will never hear the end of this one!

Ladies and gentlemen, after 3:36 of round 3, we have a winner by way of KO (Punches). Sam Urai!
A determined Sam Urai didn't want to dwell on this fight in his post fight interview. Instead he was more keen to state he wants a title shot. Let's see if he gets it!
